A Note from the Principal:
Dear Thorson Families,

As we wind down the school year, I would like to take the opportunity to thank you for your unwavering support.  Our staff and students have shown perseverance and have maintained a positive attitude towards their learning.  Thank you for setting that tone in your homes and partnering with us to make the school year successful for all of our learners.

We have scheduled our modified Field Day for Monday, June 7. All grades K-5 will have a scheduled time to rotate through a variety of stations. You will receive additional information from your child(ren)'s teachers regarding any end-of-the-year activities, but please note that we will likely use our outdoor spaces more often during the next week and a half.  As a result, please make sure that students are dressed appropriately for the ever-changing Wisconsin weather.  Thank you!

There is no school on Monday, May 31, in observance of Memorial Day.  Classes will resume on Tuesday, June 1.

Thorson Green Squad Needs Your Help! 
Join us on June 13th at 1:00 for a Thorson forest clean-up! All ages welcome!
The Thorson Green Squad needs your help to keep our school forest safe and usable for all! We are looking for volunteers to help widen trails, blaze new trails, mulch trails, and cut down trees and invasive species so that our students and community can continue to enjoy nature. 
If you can't make it, we need cardboard boxes with the tape removed! (Please only thick cardboard, no cereal boxes) Students can bring it to school and drop it off outside Mrs. Papke's 1st-grade classroom.

Chromebooks are used every day in the classroom.  Please make sure your student has their charged Chromebook daily.

Absent/ Late Arrival- If you are late or absent, please call the Thorson attendance line at 262-376-6766 before 9:00 a.m.  Please state your students' first and last name, teacher, and the reason for the absence. If your student is taking hot lunch, they will need to log in to their Google form to make their lunch choice or notify the office. When reporting your child absent due to illness, please describe their symptoms; this information is critical for our district health staff and tracking purposes. 

PAWSitively PTO Dining for Dollars*Save the Date* On Tuesday, June 1, from 11a.m.-6:00 p.m, Little's BBQ Co food truck will be at Citgo Super Sales in Grafton( corner of HWY 60/North Port Washington Road--near Costco area).  Order online the night before the event, and 20% of the sales go back to the Thorson PTO.   Give a High Five Show your appreciation for a Thorson staff member by giving them a written HIGH FIVE and support the PTO at the same time! For as little as $5, submit a written HIGH FIVE--a shout-out, compliment, or thank you--that will be posted to our Thorson PTO Facebook page on Fridays as well as on display in the Thorson Elementary staff lounge. Fill out the simple Google form and follow the link to pay through PayPal! Google Form: https://docs.google.com/.../1ORKqtACV1nI1ERq_D.../edit Additional information can be found on the PTO website at http://www.thorsonpto.org/give-a-high-five.html Boxtops There have been a few changes to the collection process of box tops this year with Covid and the discontinuation of the clipping process of boxtops. The Boxtop Collection is now done through the Boxtop App on any smartphone or device (see this link for a video on the app ( https://youtu.be/Hh94b2BvFK4). Once you upload the app and enter your information, you can choose “Thorson Elementary” as your school to donate to.  Once the app is accessible, you scan your receipt after each visit to the store to accrue box tops for your family to donate to our school.  You have up to 14 days from the day you did your shopping to scan the receipt before it can no longer be used. With our limit in a reward system this year, due to Covid and the precautions, we have decided to offer an extra recess to all classrooms should we meet a school-wide goal of $300.00 boxtops scanned by each of the following three dates:  December 11th, 2020, March 12th, 2021, and May 28th, 2021. Once you get the app set up, it is fairly easy to use.  Please make sure to refer the app to families and friends to help with our program! Newsletter-Our Week In Review May 24-28th

Dear Parents,

This week we worked on the tricky y.  We found out that when y is at the end of the word, it can make the long i sound.  Words like fly, try, shy, and my are part of this spelling pattern. All of our star words have been introduced!  Hooray!   We reviewed these words in the stories, poems, and writing we did this week.  We continue to review all words and assess through the year! Please continue to work on these words with your child. 

The story this week was Monster Trouble.  This book is about a little girl who keeps getting bothered by monsters at bedtime.  She keeps trying different ways to get rid of those monsters at night time.  We learned from this story the importance of perseverance.  When we worked on this story, we gained background knowledge, worked on vocabulary words, retold the story, and compared characters.  Ask your kindergartner what his/her favorite part of the story was.

We work on a poem each week.  This week's poem is called "Summer Vacation" We looked for rhyming words, talked about vocabulary words, and sorted out words that have the silent e  and do not have the silent e.  I am sure you have heard this poem often at home!  Ask your kindergartner to sing you this poem.

This week we continued to work on writing friendly letters.  We wrote letters to our first-grade teachers and to some other special staff members in the building.

Dear Parents,

This week we reviewed the silent e spelling pattern.   Words like make, tube, home, and time are part of this spelling pattern. All of our star words have been introduced!  Hooray!   We reviewed these words in the stories, poems, and writing we did this week.  We continue to review all words and assess through the year! Please continue to work on these words with your child. 

The story this week was Jabari Jumps.  This book is about a boy who overcomes his fear of jumping off the diving board. While listening to the story, students were working on predicting, retelling, and making inferences.   Ask your kindergartner what their favorite part in the story was.

A Note from the Principal:
Dear Thorson Families,

We had a blast at our all-school glow dance party last week. The students enjoyed themselves and showed what it means to be a positive jaguar! This week, students began their Spring reading and math MAP testing and have shown focus and perseverance during this important assessment. I am so proud of them. As we finish out these last 13 days of school, we are so pleased to see the commitment that the students continue to show for their schoolwork. Way to go, Thorson Jaguars!

On Monday, May 24th, we will be having a district-wide Cedarburg Pride dress up day. It will be fun to dress in tropical designs and colors in spite of the stormy weather that is in the forecast. 

As we close out the year, the focus of our staff continues to be to end this school year with as much joy as possible while maintaining a safe and respectful school climate where we can learn, laugh, and grow with one another. We are looking forward to ending the year strong! Have a wonderful weekend!

While nearly 700 students have already signed up for CSD Summer Academy, there are still many open classes for our elementary students. Summer Academy is a great way for students to explore new topics, develop skills and have fun with friends during the summer mornings.
Here’s how to join:
Review the catalog to find your favorite courses (include back-ups in case any first choices are full).

 2021 Thorson Elementary Oak Leaf Award
It is time to nominate a deserving Thorson parent or staff member for the Thorson Oak Leaf Award. Please take a moment to read this whole message.
The purpose of this award is to recognize a Thorson school community volunteer who has gone “above and beyond the call of duty” to make Thorson a better place for our children, students, and school community.
Perhaps you know someone who has given much of their own time as a volunteer or someone who has selflessly contributed whenever they were asked. Maybe it is someone who has helped out “behind the scenes” at almost every event, without a chairperson title or recognition, or perhaps there is someone who has done something exceptional for our school this year. You may want to nominate someone who has contributed throughout the years and is now “moving on” to middle school.
We know that this year has not provided a lot of opportunities to be involved "in" Thorson as parent volunteers, but there are plenty of people who have helped in the past several years, and continue to be involved in supporting our school community this year. We thank ALL OF YOU who have helped make this year and every year a little brighter with your support!
**Special Note re: Staff Nominations: The Thorson Elementary Oak Leaf Award is a "volunteer" award, and is not meant to be a teaching or staff excellence award. This award is meant to recognize someone who has given of their time to PTO and the Thorson school community outside of their typical teaching/staff role.**

The monthly update to the Board included a presentation on the current COVID mitigation measures in place and the implications of any significant shifts for the remainder of the school year.  The modification to the current measures in place was to make masks optional when outdoors and reduce our contact tracing efforts to 3 feet, instead of 6 feet, which aligns with the recent CDC change to social distancing at 3 feet, as long as other mitigation measures continue. Beginning Monday, May 3, the new measures will be in effect for the remainder of the 20-21 school year, which includes Summer Academy. No other modifications to our mitigation measures were changed. We thank you for your continued support in helping us to keep our students and staff safe and healthy. We are all committed to ensuring a safe learning environment for the remainder of the school year.

Wear Neon or White Tomorrow

 

A Note from the Principal:
Dear Thorson Families,

We are enjoying the warmer weather and the students are having a blast with various countdown activities to the end of the school year. It is amazing how fast time is flying! Tomorrow we will have our next all-school PBIS reward celebration. The students again filled the bucket with Cedarburg pride tickets, so they will be participating in a fun Glow Dance Party in the gym tomorrow. Please remind your child to wear neon or white so that they GLOW!

We will be starting our spring MAP (Measure of Academic Performance) assessments in grades K-5 next week. Please watch for information from your child(ren)’s teacher(s) to see when your child will participate in this assessment. Please do your best to avoid absences during these testing times and ensure that your child is well-rested and has a healthy breakfast on those days.

Finally, Summer Academy is a great chance to strengthen your child’s learning and explore areas of interest. Please check the notes below and don’t wait to sign your children up for some fun summer learning.

This week's story was Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus & The Pigeon Finds a Hot Dog. Both books are by one of our favorite authors, Mo Willems.   Both are ridiculous stories about a very persistent Pigeon!  While listening to the story, students were working on predicting, retelling, and making inferences.   Ask your kindergartner what their favorite part in the story was.

We were showered with kind words and spoiled with treats, lunches, coupons, and all kinds of other great things! It is a reminder of what a wonderful and supportive community we have here in Cedarburg. We are so lucky to work in a district with families and community members that partner with us and support us in educating our students. On behalf of all of the staff at Thorson, we sincerely thank you for making us feel so special this week and supporting us throughout the year.  During May, we are learning about the character trait of commitment. We teach the students that commitment means being willing to give your time and energy to a job, activity, or something you believe in. We share with the students' different ways they can show commitment and examples of how students and staff show commitment to various things, such as being a student, being involved in a sport, or playing a musical instrument. We encourage you to talk to your child about commitment and reinforce this concept at home! The Cedarburg School District places a significant focus on the academic success and the social, emotional wellness of our students. To support our student's social and emotional wellness, the district uses the Devereux Student Strengths Assessment (DESSA) at 5K through 5th Grade at Thorson. Please take a moment to read this whole message. The purpose of this award is to recognize a Thorson school community volunteer who has gone “above and beyond the call of duty” to make Thorson a better place for our children, students, and school community. Perhaps you know someone who has given much of their own time as volunteers or someone who has selflessly contributed whenever they were asked. Maybe it is someone who has helped out “behind the scenes” at almost every event, without a chairperson title or recognition, or perhaps there is someone who has done something exceptional for our school this year. You may want to nominate someone who has contributed throughout the years and is now “moving on” to middle school. We know that this year has not provided many opportunities to be involved "in" Thorson as parent volunteers. Still, there are plenty of people who have helped in the past several years and continue to be involved in supporting our school community this year. Thorson Elementary Oak Leaf Award Nomination Form Important Early Release Day Procedures We have one more early release day scheduled for the 2020-21 school year, on Friday, May 21, where students are released at 1:45 p.m. It is important to note that our busing/going home policies on early release days are the same as regular dismissal days. These include the following: If your student does not have a regular bus route established for PM dismissal, we cannot put them on a bus route home on early release days. Students are not able to ride home on a bus route different than their own. Absent/ Late Arrival- If you are late or absent, please call the Thorson attendance line at 262-376-6766 before 9:00 a.m.  Please state your students' first and last name, teacher, and the reason for the absence. If your student is taking hot lunch, they will need to log in to their Google form to make their lunch choice or notify the office. When reporting your child absent due to illness, please describe their symptoms; this information is critical for our district health staff and tracking purposes.  PAWSitively PTO Give a High Five Show your appreciation for a Thorson staff member by giving them a written HIGH FIVE and support the PTO at the same time! Google Form: https://docs.google.com/.../1ORKqtACV1nI1ERq_D.../edit Additional information can be found on the PTO website at http://www.thorsonpto.org/give-a-high-five.html Boxtops There have been a few changes to the collection process of box tops this year with Covid and the discontinuation of the clipping process of boxtops. The Boxtop Collection is now done through the Boxtop App on any smartphone or device (see this link for a video on the app ( https://youtu.be/Hh94b2BvFK4). Once you upload the app and enter your information, you can choose “Thorson Elementary” as your school to donate to.  Once the app is accessible, you scan your receipt after each visit to the store to accrue box tops for your family to donate to our school.  You have up to 14 days from the day you did your shopping to scan the receipt before it is no longer able to be used. With our limit in a reward system this year, due to Covid and the precautions, we have decided to offer an extra recess to all classrooms should we meet a school-wide goal of $300.00 boxtops scanned by each of the following three dates:  December 11th, 2020, March 12th, 2021, and May 28th, 2021. Once you get the app set up, it is fairly easy to use.  Please make sure to refer the app to families and friends to help with our program! Next PTO MEETING  May 10,2021 PTO Agenda Meeting Minutes  YMCA before and after school programs Click Here for Information on our Before and After School Programs From the Cedarburg School District: At Tuesday night’s School Board meeting, the topic of our CSD face-covering mandate, contract tracing, social distancing, and quarantine were all topics on the agenda. The monthly update to the Board included a presentation on the current COVID mitigation measures and the implications of any significant shifts for the remainder of the school year.  The modification to the current measures in place was to make masks optional when outdoors and reduce our contact tracing efforts to 3 feet instead of 6 feet, which aligns with the recent CDC change to social distancing at 3 feet, as long as other mitigation measures continue. Beginning Monday, May 3, the new measures will affect the remainder of the 20-21 school year, which includes Summer Academy. No other modifications to our mitigation measures were changed. Thank you for your continued support in helping us to keep our students and staff safe and healthy. We are all committed to ensuring a safe learning environment for the remainder of the school year. The CSD Summer Academy returns to an IN-PERSON environment for the 2021 summer!  With appropriate health and safety precautions/mitigations, Cedarburg students can once again participate in fun and enriching summer learning opportunities at a free or minimal cost. The Summer Academy for Grades 5K - 11 students (based on 2020-21 grade) includes:  Summer Enrichment Academy (SEA) - a wide range of high-interest and activity-based classes (crafts, cooking, games, technology, robotics, music, sports, and more) Summer Time Extension Program (STEP) - academic support in reading and math (offered to students based on teacher recommendations).  The Summer Academy runs 4 mornings per week (Monday through Thursday) for 4 hours per day (8:00 AM-Noon) over 4 weeks. SAVE THE DATES! 1st Session - June 21-24 & June 28-July 1 No Classes the Week of July 5 2nd Session - July 12-15 & July 19-22  More than 1,000 students typically participate in this program, and classes can fill up fast.
