From the Thorson Office

ALL THINGS THORSON!
Thursday, March 19, 2020

A Note from the Principal:
Dear Thorson Families,
I hope that you are doing well.  It has definitely been a trying week for all in our community and around the nation.  At this time, we need to stay focused on what is most important, which is the health and safety of our families.  As state, national and world health experts update us on precautions that must be taken in order to slow down the spread of COVID-19, it is important that we follow their recommendations and directives.
During the school closure, we will continue to provide you with updated communication from both the district and school.  From the district, you can expect to receive their special edition newsletter with Coronavirus Covid-19 news and updates on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.  From the school level, we will provide a weekly message from me on Tuesdays and our regular Thursday Folder communication each Thursday. We know that this is a challenging and uncertain time, and we want to continue to maintain our strong connection with all of you!  We are here to support you!
Next week is our regularly scheduled Spring Break. On March 30, we will begin our virtual learning experience.  More information will be coming soon on this! Throughout the school closure, the school office will be closed to the public, but we are still available to assist you via email.  If you have questions or need assistance, email your child’s teacher, school secretary Lindsay O’Morrow at lomorrow@cedarburg.k12.wi.us, or me at alittle@cedarburg.k12.wi.us.
During the school closure, it is a good idea to keep a routine and try to stay connected.  Thorson will continue to post regularly on our school Facebook Page. We could use your help with this!   Please email lwinter@cedarburg.k12.wi.us pictures/videos of your children saying the pledge of allegiance, reading, engaging in virtual learning, making art, singing, playing outside, etc. This is one small way we can stay connected with our school community.
Stay Safe. Stay Healthy.
Sincerely,
Angela Little

If a student reads six hours at home by Thursday, April 9th, he or she will receive a ticket to visit Great America.  New to the program this year, students do not need to return their paper log to their teachers, instead parents log their child's reading time online.  The log that you will be receiving has our school's code at the top( PSJPK).  All you need to do is enter the code and then select your child's teacher.  Happy Reading!

Just Checking In

Hello Families,

I just wanted to say hello and that I miss all of you lots!  I hope you are all doing well and staying safe.

I sent home a LOT of materials on Friday and just wanted to let you know that I am NOT expecting everything to get accomplished.  (Unless your child REALLY wants to! or you REALLY want your child to do it!  :) )  As teachers, we were given instructions on what we should do to prepare for  learning from home.  The kindergarten team worked together to create learning opportunities for your child.  Directions will be sent home soon as to what that will look like.

If at all you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.  I am checking my school email daily and will do my best to get back to you with answers as soon as I can.

Please give your kiddo a BIG hug from me and let them know I miss them!

Take care,
Erin Rocklewitz

Newsletter-Our Week In Review- March 9-13th

Dear Parents,

This week we talked about the ea spelling pattern.  We found out that when two vowels go walking the first one does the talking.   We sorted out short e words and long e words that had the ea pattern.  We made words that contained the ea spelling pattern like read, seal, meal, and steam.  We worked on the star words "they" and "came".  We reviewed these words in the stories, poems, and writing we did this week.  We continue to review all words and assess through the year! Please continue to work on these words with your child.

The story this week was Jamie O'Rourke and The Big Potato.  It is very silly story about a very lazy man who caught a leprechaun!  While listening to the story, students were working on the strategies of identifying the problem and solution, retelling, inference, making connections, and stating their opinion.  Ask your kindergartner what their favorite part in the story was.

Here is a link to the video for you to enjoy!

We work on a poem each week.  This week's poem is called "Luck of the Irish"  We created movements, looked for rhyming words, and sorted out word families.  I am sure you have heard this poem often at home!

Reminders:

Tomorrow is Jaguar Jump Start!  Be at school on time!

Students should wear their favorite college team's spirit wear.

Thank you for all of your support!

A Note from the Principal:
Dear Thorson Families,
Last weekend our PTO winter carnival was a HUGE success!  Thanks to all who helped in any way, donated items, or attended the event.  It was great to see so many families in attendance and to see the smiling faces of the students.  Everyone had a great time. Special thanks to parent Jessica Zolp for chairing the event! We appreciate everyone’s support!
Did you know that your child has a RAZ Kids account?  This program allows your child to read a variety of books at their reading level and to engage with other reading content and is generously funded by our PTO.  The students use the program at times during the school day, but are also welcomed and encouraged to use it at home. At Monday’s PTO meeting, our IMC director Blair McCalmont, provided a short tutorial for parents regarding using RAZ kids at home.  If you need any assistance with logging in or have questions, please feel free to reach out to Blair or your child’s classroom teacher.
Finally, there are three PTO board member positions that will be open for the 2020-2021 school year.  These positions include President, Vice President, and Secretary. The election for these positions will occur at the May PTO Board meeting, which will be held on May 11, 2020.  If you are interested in running for one of these positions, please contact the school office and we will pass your information on to the PTO Board. Please consider running for one of these important positions.
Sincerely,
Angela Little

Newsletter- Our Week In Review- March 2-6th

Dear Parents,

This week we talked about the i_e spelling pattern.  We found out that the e at the end of the word makes the i say its name- it makes the long i sound.   We sorted out short i words and long i words that had the i_e pattern.  We made words that contained the i_e spelling pattern like hive, five, ride, and hide.  We worked on the star words "out" and "but".  We reviewed these words in the stories, poems, and writing we did this week.  We continue to review all words and assess through the year! Please continue to work on these words with your child.

The story this week was The Three Billy Goats Fluff. It is very similar to the story of The Three Billy Goats Gruff.  Be sure to ask your kindergartner what was the same and what was different in both stories! While listening to the story, students were working on the strategies of identifying the problem and solution, retelling, inference, making connections, and stating their opinion.  Ask your kindergartner what their favorite part in the story was.

A Note from the Principal:
Dear Thorson Families,
We had a great week at Thorson celebrating reading with our spirit week dress up days.  The students enjoyed the theme and enjoyed hearing lots of Dr. Seuss books. The fun will continue this weekend with our annual Winter Carnival!  The carnival will run from 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. This year, CG Schmidt will be doing tours of the new construction site from 12:00-2:00 p.m. The carnival is a fun event for the whole family!  There is something for everyone! We hope to see you all there. Also, we are still in need of some volunteers to make this event successful. Please take a look at the volunteer opportunities available and sign up to help at this link!
Between March 9th and March 20th, the Cedarburg School District will be deploying a satisfaction survey to all school staff, parents and students assessing a variety of school related areas. The survey will assist in strengthening school and district programs, climate, and culture, while guiding us on priorities for future planning.  We are working with an independent educational research firm to conduct the confidential survey administration and assist with results analysis. Watch for more information to be shared via email soon.
Have a great weekend everyone!

Green Eggs and Ham (Bacon!)

Image result for green eggs and ham

Today we celebrated Green Eggs and Ham day by having some green eggs and bacon!  Instead of putting ham pieces in the eggs, bacon pieces were used instead.  All students tried at least a tiny bite and many friends said it tasted good!  Great job trying something new!

Getting the eggs and bacon ready- just regular eggs, bacon pieces, and green food coloring!

A is so happy to try!

J is excited too!

H thinks they are great!

M loved them!

K thinks they are awesome!
