Newsletter-Our Week In Review

Dear Families,

In Communication Arts, we have been working on the word families ug and un, We have also been identifying the Star Words “play” and “at”.  Please continue to practice star words with your child.  We test these throughout the school year.  The story this week was Scaredy Squirrel  by Melanie Watt.  While listening to the story, students were working on the strategies of predicting, retelling, connecting, and using the skill of infer.  The children really loved hearing the silly story about a squirrel that was afraid of so many things.  Ask your kindergartner what Scaredy was afraid of and what their favorite part of the story was!

In Math we are working on strategies for counting.  We know how to count and check, count and touch, and use a tens frame.  We have been playing games to see how many more we would need to fill up our tens frame.  This is a great start to be learning our math facts!

 Reminders:
Conferences are this evening and on Monday evening.  I am looking forward to meeting with all of you!

Check out our cool turkeys in the hallway!  There are some amazing creations!

Dear Parents,
We had a very busy and productive first quarter.  I look forward to meeting with you next week for a conference to discuss your child’s progress.

In Communication Arts, we have been working on the word families et and ed, We have also been identifying the Star Words “is” and “it”.  Please continue to practice star words with your child.  We test these throughout the school year.  The story this week was Wemberly Worried by Kevin Henkes.  While listening to the story, students were working on the strategies of predicting, retelling, connecting, and using the skill of infer.  The children really loved hearing another story by Kevin Henkes.  Ask your kindergartner what their favorite part of the story was!

In Writing we are continuing to work on our pattern books.  These books start with the same phrase on each page.  For example, "I like pizza. I like popcorn. I like apples." Students are asked to start each sentence with a capital letter, have spaces between their words, spell their star words correctly, and end each sentence with a period.  I have enjoyed reading their work!

Math Packets

Dear Families,

In your child's folder on Monday there will be a math packet.  There is a little stamp on it that says "Homework" but it does not need to be turned in.  It is simply another way to practice the concepts that we are learning in class.  If your child does want to turn it in, I will be more than happy to look at it!

Thank you!
