A Note from the Principal:
Dear Thorson Families, 

Tomorrow is another Early Release day for our students and staff. The teachers are so grateful to have the time to plan and collaborate with one another on these Friday afternoons. As we know you understand, our teachers have had to do things quite differently this year, and offering both virtual and in-person instruction has required us to work together as a district in ways that we have not in the past. Sharing students and staff with the other elementary schools has had its challenges, but it has also increased our capacity to learn from one another and to make sure all Cedarburg students are getting the best possible learning experiences. 

As we approach the holidays, we are all trying to be extra vigilant with hand washing, mask-wearing, symptom monitoring, and social distancing both at school and out in the community. It is our hope that our collective efforts will allow everyone to remain healthy so the winter break can be enjoyed by all. Please help us out by making sure your children have a good supply of clean and proper fitting face masks. After repeated use and laundering, some ear straps may be sagging, or your child may have grown, and their masks may no longer be comfortable. Also, after recess time, many students have wet masks due to condensation and are in need of a new dry mask.  If you are able to send a few masks each day for your child, that would be helpful.

As we gear up for winter, all of our classes will be assigned to recess zones that may not include cleared paved areas.  For this reason, snow boots and snow pants are now even more important than in the past. In order for the children to have fun outside, appropriate outerwear is required. Typical of our Wisconsin winters, it looks like we may get some warmer (and sloppier) weather starting this weekend. Boots and snow pants will still be needed to keep the mud and slush out of our classrooms.  Your child is welcome to keep a bag with outdoor clothing at school on his/her hook.

There is Snow Better Time to Read! The Cedarburg Public Library is sponsoring a reading challenge this winter for readers of ALL ages. That's right, adults at home can join in the fun with your Thorson student. Cozy up with some books and start the challenge on December 14th. Review the challenge here, watch the promotional video. Absent/ Late Arrival- If you are going to be late or absent, please call the Thorson attendance line at 262-376-6766 before 9:00 a.m.  Please state your student's first and last name, teacher, and the reason for the absence. If your student will be taking hot lunch they will need to login to their Google form to make their lunch choice or notify the office. When reporting your child absent due to illness, please describe their symptoms, this information is critical for our district health staff and tracking purposes.

Fill out the simple Google form and follow the link to pay through PayPal! Newsletter-Our Week In Review- December 14-18

Dear Parents,

This week we talked about the   We also learned the sight words "an" and “one”. We reviewed these words in the stories, poems, and writing we did this week.  We continue to review all words and assess through the year! Please continue to work on these words with your child.

The story this week was The Gingerbread Girl by Lisa Campbell Ernst.  While listening to the story, students were working on the strategies of making predictions, retelling, answering questions, and stating their opinion.  The children really loved it when the Gingerbread Girl tamed the tricky fox.

This week, our poem was called Gingerbread Man.  Ask your kindergartner to sing it to you!

In writing, we are finishing up our work on our narrative stories.  We worked on remembering to add a capital letter to start our sentences and adding a period to the end of our sentences.  We are also able to add some color to our stories.  On Monday, we will celebrate our narrative stories!

Reminders:

1. Tomorrow is Jaguar Jump Start!  Wear your Thorson gear or the color blue.

2. Practice the self-care skills of zipping, buttoning, and tying shoelaces.  Winter break is a perfect time to practice!

3. Remember to add your child's name to his/her winter gear.

The story this week was The Gingerbread Man retold by Jim Aylesworth.  While listening to the story, students were working on the strategies of visualizing, retelling, problem/solution, character traits, and stating their opinion.  The children really loved it when the Gingerbread Man popped out of the oven and surprised the Old Man and Old Woman.

This week, our poem was called Gingerbread Man.  We looked at rhyming words, looked for star words, and identified the three animals that were chasing after the gingerbread man.  Ask your kindergartner to sing it to you!

In writing, we are continuing to work on our true stories.  The kindergarten students are learning to revise their work.  When we revise, we can add to our stories to make them even better.

A Note from the Principal:

Dear Thorson Families, 

Thank you to all families for your response to the Second Semester Learning Environment Survey.  We are busy reviewing the information received from this survey along with input received from staff and families.  Thank you for your patience as we work through this process to ensure every student receives access to instruction and a quality learning experience.  We will make every effort to keep things as stable as possible and will notify all families of their second-semester placement information in January. 

We are focusing on the character trait of kindness during December.  We have talked to the students about showing kindness in many different ways and have challenged them to be the “I” in kind.  One way to show kindness is by helping those in need.  To this end, we are still collecting toys for the Kapco Kids 2 Kids Toy Drive through tomorrow, December 11.  Thanks to all who have donated thus far.  Toys can be dropped off on the cart at the front doors.  Thank you for your support!  

Finally, the weather is getting colder and snow will be coming soon. Please ensure that your child has proper winter/snow gear at school each day.  Students should have boots, snow pants, a warm coat, a hat, and mittens/gloves.  When snow is present, students are only allowed to play in the areas off the blacktop if they have boots and snow pants. Additionally, you should have received an email from Superintendent Todd Bugnacki last week regarding our school closing procedures.  Please be sure to review this information.  Remember that school closing information will be reported on all major radio and tv stations as well as the district website.  Parents will also receive district communication regarding closings via email, phone or text based on the preferences you provided in Skyward during the online registration process.  More information regarding school closings can be found in the elementary student handbook on page 19 or on the district website at this link.  If you have any questions about this, feel free to contact the school office.

This survey is designed to gather feedback on how our learning environments are working and to identify areas needing further attention as we progress towards the mid-year point. If you did not receive an email invitation please check your “spam/junk” folder. One single-use survey link was sent to each parent's email address on file with the District. Dear Families,

The story this week was The Bear Snores On by Karma Wilson.  While listening to the story, students were working on the strategies of visualizing, retelling, and adding to their schema about brown bears.  Ask your kindergartner what they learned about brown bears.

In math, we are working hard at writing equations.  We can write equations as 3 + 2 = 5 & 5 = 3+2.  Students are also being asked to double numbers.  1 + 1=2, 2+2=4 and so on.  You are welcome to practice these skills by playing games that are available on our math choice boards.  It is also a great idea for students to be working on Dreambox.

We will see all of our in-person friends back on Monday, December 7th!  It will be great to have you back.  Virtual families, if you haven't already, please contact the main office about your choice for 2nd Semester.

Early Release Tomorrow, December 4th! 

 

A Note from the Principal:
Dear Thorson Families,

Thank you to all of the families who have already responded to the new Second Semester Learning Environment Survey in Skyward Family Access. We do expect families to fill out the survey for each child, as your preference for at home or on campus instruction may have changed since August. This is especially important at the elementary level since our students are less likely to be assigned to a blended classroom and we need to maintain appropriate staffing in all environments.  If you have not completed this form yet, please do so as soon as possible.  

We are happy to be welcoming our in-person learners back into the building on Monday, December 7.  There will be no changes to the current instruction for students participating in our virtual learning environment.

Thank you for continuing to do your part to reduce the spread of the virus and keep our doors and classrooms open for our in-person students and staff.  Stay safe and be well!

Newsletter- Our Week In Review- November 23-24

 

Dear Families,

In Communication Arts, we have been working on the word family -am and reviewed past word families. We have also been practicing our past star words.  Please continue to practice star words with your child.  We test these throughout the school year.  The story this week was The Relatives Came by  Cynthia Rylant.  While listening to the story, students were working on the strategies of predicting, retelling, connecting, and using the skill of inferring.  Ask your kindergartner what their favorite part of the story was!

This week our poem was Food Cheer.  We worked on finding vowels, rhyming words, and our star words.  Ask your kindergartner to sing it to you!

Lexia Tip

 Some of us are experiencing students who are frustrated about getting the same content they just had when they log back into Lexia the next time.  Please make sure your students are completing the activities in the unit before logging out for the day.  They’ll know where they are within the unit by noticing the progress bar that extends toward the right every time they answer a question.  Once that bar is all the way to the right, they’ve finished a unit.  Now they are safe to log out.  If they get halfway through that bar and stop, they will repeat the content next time, which can be frustrating.

Veteran's Day 2020

 

On Wednesday, we celebrated Veteran's Day with a short assembly outside.  As a school, we said the Pledge of Allegiance and sang the Star-Spangled Banner.  

We say thank you to all those who have served in the military.

A Note from the Principal:
Dear Thorson Families,

As we get closer to the holidays, it is more important than ever to remain vigilant about Covid 19 mitigation efforts.   Please do your part to slow the spread.  The number of Covid 19 cases is rising in our state and county.  You can follow the CEDARBURG SCHOOL DISTRICT COVID DASHBOARD to stay up-to-date on cases and quarantines of staff and students in the district. 

I know how hard you have been working.  I have seen you wearing masks, social distancing and I am grateful for the sacrifices you are making to keep our community healthy.  Please don't let up.  All of us are experiencing pandemic fatigue, but letting our guard down now, even with close friends and families, poses a risk.  We are counting on you to help us keep our doors open.  

If your child(ren) does need to be out for a period of time due to Covid 19 (isolation or quarantine), I will work with the classroom teachers to determine the best course of action for delivering materials and instruction.  Providing virtual instruction looks different at the elementary level than it does at the middle and high school level.  Students who are out of school should access their learning content through their teacher’s Canvas page.  There may be some live streamed instruction, but this will vary based on the grade level and specifics of the situation. When students are out for a period of time, there are materials that need to be prepared and sent home.  Therefore, students cannot just flip from in-person to virtual learning without prior notice or approval.  Please know that we will do our best to accommodate each situation as it arises, and we appreciate your understanding, flexibility and patience as we navigate this. 

Thank you for partnering with us.  The need to work together to stay safe so that we can stay open is so important!

If your child did not attend virtual pictures day, he/she will be able to have their picture taken on December 9th. 
If you would like your child to have his/her picture re-taken, please send the picture packet back to school with your child on December 9th. We must have the packet before a picture can be retaken!

Absent/ Late Arrival- If you are going to be late or absent, please call the Thorson attendance line at 262-376-6766 before 9:00 a.m.  Please state your students first and last name, teacher, and the reason for the absence.If your student will be taking hot lunch they will need to login to their Google form to make their lunch choice or notify the office. When reporting your child absent due to illness, please describe their symptoms, this information is critical for our district health staff and tracking purposes. 

From the Thorson PTO: Thorson's Fall Market Thorson Fall Market is a new 2020 virtual event. You will find buy now auction items (collected for the canceled Parent's Night Out in April.) Boxtops There have been a few changes to the collection process of boxtops this year with Covid and the discontinuation of the clipping process of boxtops. The Boxtop Collection is now done through the Boxtop App on any smart phone or device (see this link for a video on the app ( https://youtu.be/Hh94b2BvFK4). Once you upload the app and enter your information you can choose “Thorson Elementary” as your school to donate to.  Once the app is accessible you scan your receipt after each visit to the store to accrue box tops for your family to donate to our school.  You have up to 14 days from the day you did your shopping to scan the receipt before it is no longer able to be used.With our limit in a reward system this year, due to Covid and the precautions, we have decided to offer an extra recess to all classrooms should we meet a school wide goal of $300.00 boxtops scanned by each of the following three dates:  December 11th 2020, March 12th 2021, and May 28th 2021.Once you get the app set up it is fairly easy to use.  Please make sure to refer the app to families and friends to help with our program!If you have any questions please feel free to reach out to me.  Thank you for your time, Dayna Biernat  Giving Tree The Thorson Giving Tree has been created by the Thorson PTO to give parents/community an opportunity to give a classroom item to a teacher member any time of the year.  Please click on this link as often as you choose.  It will be updated from time to time, so please check in often.  Thank you!
