Starbucks-Dramatic Play Area

Families,

Our movie theater will be closing this December but in its place will be Starbucks!  The kids voted and they said that they wanted to change our dramatic play area to Starbucks.  

We are in need of some supplies for our new dramatic play area.  If you are able to donate or let us use a few items, they will be returned to you.  

Items wanted:

Coffee makers

Headsets (for the drive thru orders!)

Starbucks bags

Coffee mugs

Coffee bags

Any other things that you can think that would make our coffee place great!

Kapco Kids to Kids Toy Drive

Last Friday was the Kapco Kids to Kids Toy Drive.  Thank you to all the families that donated toys or money to this wonderful cause.  Our school raised over $1,200!  Amazing!  Please enjoy the Animoto video of this assembly.

Gingerbread Houses 2018

Last week we made gingerbread houses!  The kiddos loved all the frosting and candy!  Thank you so much to all the families for the materials, your time, and for your support with this project.  We couldn't have made our delicious houses without the help of all of you!

Special Guest Reader

E was our student of the week last week.  She invited her dad to come and read her favorite story Love You Forever.  The kiddos loved seeing the little boy grow up and thought it was funny that the mom kept singing to him even when he got bigger.  Mrs. Rocky on the otherhand started crying!  :)

Hats and Pjs

Tomorrow students have the opportunity to wear a hat or pajamas to school with a $1 donation to the Kapco Kids to Kids Toy Drive. If students want to wear a hat AND pajamas, students should donate $2. Please be sure that students wear shoes if they decide to wear pajamas.

Please be sure to donate a toy to the toy drive! Friday is the last day!

Newsletter-Our Week In Review- December 3-7th

Dear Parents,

This week we talked about the sounds wh and th.  We also learned the sight words "up","do" and “an”. We reviewed these words in the stories, poems, and writing we did this week.  We continue to review all words and assess through the year! Please continue to work on these words with your child.

The story this week was The Gingerbread Man  retold by Jim Aylesworth.  While listening to the story, students were working on the strategies of visualizing, retelling, problem/solution, character traits, and stating their opinion.  The children really loved it when the Gingerbread Man popped out of the oven and surprised the Old Man and Old Woman.

3. Practice the self-care skills of zipping, buttoning, and tying shoe laces.

Special Guest Reader

C was our Student of the Week and today she invited her mom to read the stories Pete the Cat Twelve Days of Christmas and Leonardo the Terrible Monster.  We loved both of them!  Thank you so much for coming.

Gingerbread Man Community Writing

This week we have been reading the story "The Gingerbread Man".  During our community writing time, we wrote what the characters said in the story.  These characters can be seen outside of our classroom.  Next time you are by our classroom, take a peek!  Ask your kindergartner which one they worked on.

We made a giant Gingerbread Man.  We labeled different parts on him and added the speech bubble of his famous saying.

Kapco Kids to Kids Toy Drive- Oranment sale tomorrow

Families,

We are collecting toys for the Kapco Kids to Kids toy drive.  If you are able to donate a brand new toy, please do so by the 14th of December. 

Tomorrow, students also have the opportunity to purchase an ornament (paper) that will hang outside of Mrs. Kikkert's office.  All money donated will go to the toy drive.  Each ornament costs $1.

A Note from the Principal:
Dear Thorson Families,

Thank you for your very generous support of our recent food drive to benefit the Saukville Food Pantry.  Working collaboratively with the other elementary schools in the district, we were able to literally “stuff” the bus!  An entire school bus full of food to benefit those in need was the result of our collective efforts. I continue to be amazed at this generous community that we have here in Cedarburg.  We now move on to our annual Kapco Kids-2-Kids Toy Drive! Our Student Council will be leading us in this drive. We will be collecting new, unwrapped toys from Dec. 3-14. We will also have a couple of special Student Council days to collect funds to donate to Kapco for this wonderful cause.  See the information below for more details.

As a continued reminder, please remember to send your child to school each day with appropriate clothing for the weather.  We have had several students coming to school without coats, hats, and gloves/mittens. Now that the snow is starting to fly, we need students to have scarves, hats, gloves/mittens, boots, snow pants and warm coats with them at school each day!  Thank you for your cooperation.

Finally, as you may have seen in today’s News Graphic, the design phase of the school district’s post-referendum project is underway!  Thorson staff will be meeting with various project managers and designers to provide input along the way. The rest of this school year will be spent on the design process.  I will continue to provide updates regarding the project throughout the year. Thank you for your continued support of our schools!

Kapco Kids 2 Kids Toy Drive
The Thorson Student Council will be collecting new, unwrapped toys from December 3-14.  This is the 8th year that Thorson has participated in this wonderful program that collects toys for children in our area.  Please consider making a donation. Your support is very much appreciated!     

Kids 2 Kids Toy Drive Events:

• December 6th  - Purchase a Student Council ornament for $1.00 to be displayed on the Student Council Bulletin Board.
• December 13th – Donate $1.00 to the toy drive and your child will be able to wear a hat or pajamas to school.

 

As a district, we are hoping to collect 10,000 toys to donate to the Kapco Kids 2 Kids Toy Drive. Please help us by donating unwrapped toys by Friday, December 14th.

Great America Reading Program
Thorson is participating in the Great America reading program.  Students (K-5) will be receiving a log and information letter sent home soon from their homeroom teacher. If a student reads six hours at home before Friday, February 15th, he or she will receive a ticket to visit Great America.  Happy Reading!

Box Tops Please keep collecting and turning in any box tops throughout the school year as we will have another Popcorn Party in the Spring for the classroom that collects the most throughout the 2018/2019 school year. The Rock-  Want to let the Thorson school /community know about something special??  Sign up to paint Thorson's CELEBRATION ROCK  Click here to reserve your spot. The cost of the rock is $10 for a 24 hour period which can be made by cash or check.Message stays in place until another Thorson family secures a 24-hour period.

Is your child eating lunch at school? Students enrolled in the free or reduced-priced lunch program receive school meals at a free or reduced rate at our schools.  Click here to view our lunch menus for the month and make sure that your child is taking advantage of the nutritious meals offered at school every day.  Applications may be submitted at any time during the school year and can be found on the Cedarburg School District Website Lunch Program.  

Newsletter- Our Week In Review- November 26-30th

The story this week was Bear Snores On  by Karma Wilson.  While listening to the story, students were working on the strategies of predicting, retelling, connecting, and using the skill of infer.  The children really loved hearing the story about a party happening in the Bear's den.  Ask your kindergartner what their favorite part of the story was!

We are working on the poem Winter's Here during shared reading time.  We are looking for rhyming words, finding vowels, and learning about the word hibernate.  Ask your kindergartner to sing it to you!

We are also reading the story Miss Mary Mack during shared reading time.  We are taking a closer look at the illustrations,  finding words that rhyme, and learning about adding 

​In science, we have started our weather unit.  We are learning the different kinds of weather:  windy, sunny, cloudy, and rainy.  

**Upcoming reminders:

 Please work on basic life skills with your kindergartner-this includes zipping up jackets, buttoning, and tying shoe laces.

Tomorrow is Jaguar Jump Start!  Wear your Thorson gear or the color blue.  

We are in need of some snack for our classroom.

Please be sure to label your child's outdoor gear.

Special Guest Readers

J is our Student of the Week.  He invited his mom, brother, sister, and grandma to come and read to us today.  We heard the story about Pete the Cat and His Magic Sunglasses.  We loved that Pete was able to look at the bright side of things when he wore them.  Ask your kindergartner what they liked about the book!  Thank you so much for coming today!

Winter Weather Is Here!

The cold weather is REALLY here!  Children do go outside for recess twice a day.  We ask that all children have nice warm coats, hats, and mittens.  Once snow is here, snow pants and boots will be needed too.  

This is the order that we ask your child to dress in.

Snow pants, boots, coat (zip up!) hat, and finally mittens/gloves.  

These posters are available for the students to look at in getting themselves dressed for the cold.  

Thank you so much in advance in working with your child prepare for the cold temperatures!

Snacks are running low!

Our community snack supplies are running low- two boxes of cereal and a bag of Chex Mix is all that we have left!  If you are able to donate to our snack time, it would be much appreciated.  This snack is used for morning snack and many children use it again if they forget their snack.

I hope you all had a very Happy Thanksgiving spent with family and friends!

Last week we celebrated Thanksgiving in our classroom.  Thank you to all the families that donated items for our special party.  The kids loved the special snack!  Please enjoy the pictures from our fun afternoon.
