Newsletter-Our Week In Review

Dear Parents,

Our unit for Reading the next three weeks is "Amazing Creatures". The theme for this week is "Interesting Insects".  Our big book is "Beetles" and our guided readers are: "Bugs", "Insects" and "About Insects".  We are focusing on the letters: "G,g and W,w" . As always we continue to review all letters and star words.  We also continue to work on phonemic isolation, blending and segmentation.  The strategy this week is asking questions and the skills are classifying and categorizing.

The kindergartners are continuing to work on number identification, adding, and subtracting during math time.  Students have also had the chance to play a number of games with the dice in order to compare numbers.  Please continue to work on proper number formation with your child.

At Science, students are learning about plants.  We have discussed how plants are alike and how plants are different.  Students have also have learned what plants need to grow.  Ask your kindergartner what these are!  Take a walk with your child or even plant some seeds to extend the learning at home!

Reminders:
Tomorrow we are going on our field trip to see Charlotte’s Web at the Schauer Theater is Hartford.  Please remind your child to be a Positive Jaguar on our field trip!

Many friends are forgetting their snacks.  Please be sure that your child has a snack to eat in the afternoon!

Kahoot!

Kahoot is a fun way to review and learn concepts. Today we used Kahoot to practice some basic math facts. Students play in teams and connect up with their iPads. Kahoot is like those trivia games that you can play at your favorite restaurant. There can be a Kahoot for anything! Ask your kindergartner about Kahoot.

Plus or Minus Game

Students were able to play the Plus or Minus game today in math. This game helps to reinforce the meaning of the addition and subtraction symbols. Students had to roll a special dice. If there was a + sign they could add to their board. If there was a - sign they had to take away their board. The first person to fill their board- wins!

Dear Parents,

We are enjoying a week of celebrating "Earth Week" with recognizing the value of recycling, reusing and reducing.

Reading:
Our theme this week is "What's in my Garden?". We have been reading about what is needed for plants to grow and how to care for them.  Our theme book is "Sunflower House" and the guided readers are: "It Was Here", "I Like This Flower" and "Kim's Garden".  Our letter is "U,u" and "K,k" and the star words are a review of little, said, here, was, and, and what.  We continue to work on phoneme blending, segmentation and deletion.  Our strategy is to recognize story structure and draw conclusions.

Writing:
We continue to write daily and integrate our writing into science, math, art and in our journals. The students look forward to making books and are spending most of their "rest" time writing, on I-Pads or computers.

Math:
We are working on money, time, problem solving and story problems.  We also try to incorporate journals and games played with partners as much as possible.

Reminders:
April 23rd is "Fine Arts" night at Thorson School.  It is a night that showcases the beautiful art our students have completed and their musical talents as well.
April 24th is "Walk to School" day.  Please note the three locations on the Thorson website.

Thank you for all of your support!

Wear White tomorrow to continue our celebration of Earth Week!

Plastic Envelopes-Take Home Books

Hopefully you have noticed a new plastic envelope coming home!  Inside this envelope should be a book that your child can read.  These new envelopes have replaced the plastic baggies that held the books previously.  When your child returns these envelopes to school, they are able to choose a new book to take home!

Please keep these envelopes safe!  I would like to use them with my future classes.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me!
