Book Bags

Families,
Tonight your child has a special book bag in his/her backpack.  This book can be read with you and your child.  Snuggle up and read together.  After you read it a few times, see if your child can read it to you.  Once your child is ready for a new book, please return the book AND the bag to school and I will send along another one.  After I work with your child for a bit and notice his/her reading level improve, I will be sure to send home another "just right" book to read.
Thank you!
Happy Reading!

Special Guest Reader

This week A as our Student of the Week.  When you are student of the week, you are able to invite a guest to come in and read to our class.  A invited her mom to come in and read a special book about A and her sister to our class.  We loved the book!  Ask your kindergartner all about it.  Thank you so much for spending your morning with us!

Bulldog Friday!  Wear your CHS Gear for Homecoming!

A Note from the Principal:
Greetings Thorson Families,
Our first day off of school is coming up next week on Friday, October 4.  This is a professional development day for teachers. The Y-Care program offers a School Out Program on this day for any students in Cedarburg.  This program is held right here at Thorson. You can find more information about this program and a sign-up form in this Thursday Folder.
Our construction project is plugging right along!  The students have been very interested in what is going on and we have several student engagement opportunities planned to keep our students involved in the process.  During the first week of school, students were introduced to Chuck Mueller, the Superintendent of our Thorson Construction Project. Mr. Mueller will be providing frequent updates for the students at our Friday Jaguar Jumpstart assemblies.  We also have an “Ask the Builder” Feature where students can write down a question regarding the construction project and we will answer them at our Jaguar Jumpstart assemblies. There is a mailbox in the hallway for students to place their questions.  Finally, we have a construction timeline in the hallway that details the various trades involved in the project and will have pictures of the progress as we go along. Stay tuned for updates throughout the year!
Remember, tomorrow is the Homecoming Parade.  Don’t forget to come out to the parade to cheer on our Thorson FUTP60 Team and to root for our CHS Bulldogs!
Sincerely,
Angela Little

Newsletter-Our Week In Review- September 23-27

Dear Families,

We have had another successful week in Kindergarten!  Thank you for all of your help in preparing your children for the day.

This week during  Reading, we have been working on the story, Chrysanthemum. In this story we worked on the skill of making predictions, retelling, character identification, inference, and opinion writing.  Ask your kindergartner what their favorite part in the story was!

This week we have been working on the letters, q, o, e, and j.  We have been able to make their sounds and identify words that start with these letters.  We have also been working on our Star Words, “and & like”.  Please be sure to practice these words with your child.

Our poem this week is Family.  I am sure that you have heard your child sing this poem at home!  In this poem we were looking for letters, counting how many words there are in a sentence, and sorting out words that start with the same letter.  Ask your kindergartner to tell you this poem.

During Math we have been working on patterns.  We heard the story The Little Red Hen and we took characters in the book to create a sound and movement.  We then created an orchestra of sound!  One group made one sound/movement and another group made another sound/movement.  We went back and forth creating an ABAB pattern.  After that, we added a third character and made an ABCABC pattern.  In math, we are also working on our Work Places.  Be sure to ask your kindergartner what his/her favorite Work Place is.

Reminders:
 * Sign up for the Basse's field trip on Skyward
*Sign up for the Elephant and Piggie-First Stage Field Trip on Skyward
* Send your child with an afternoon snack- the morning snack is taken care of for you!  Thank you to parents who have donated items.
*Tomorrow is Cedarburg's Homecoming!  Wear Black and Orange to cheer on the Bulldogs!

Field Trip to Basse's!

Our field trip to Basse's is a week away!  Be sure that you have signed up your child to go on the field trip!  We don't want to leave anyone behind.

Not sure if you signed up?  Please be sure to check with the school office.

Birthday Treats

Families,

We love to celebrate birthdays in kindergarten!  It is such an exciting day!

Many families are wondering about birthday treats and what that means for our classroom.  In our classroom, I ask for the following things:

1. Napkins

2. If your treat needs to be cut (a cookie cake, brownies, Rice Krispie treats, etc) that it is cut before school.  I do not keep a knife here at school!  :)

3. Items should not contain nuts.

4. If at all possible, NO cupcakes.  Often cupcakes from bakeries (Pick n Save, Meijer, etc) are way too big and way too messy.  Our room (and faces) ends up with a ton of colorful frosting mess everywhere.  It would be so helpful!

Thank you!

If you have questions, please feel free to contact me.

Take care,
Mrs. Rocky

Star Word List Sent Home

Families,
In your child's take home folder is a Star Word list.  Please practice this list with your child.  When your child is able to read these words, send it back with your child's name and your signature.  I will then test your child on these words.  If your child is able to read all of the words to me (I will often go out of order so make sure that your child can read them in any setting!) I will give them the next list of words to work on.

Ways to practice these words with your child:
* you read- they read
* write them out
*build with play doh
* build with magnet letters
* write in sand, shaving cream, etc.
* paint the words
* write the words down and hide them in your house.  Have the child go on a star word hunt
* build the words using Legos
*find these words in books that you read together

Check on Pinterest for more ideas on how to practice these words with your child.

You can also see ALL of the kindergarten Star Words on our blog page.

I am so excited to listen to all of my readers!
Thank you!
Mrs. Rocky

When it is your child's special week, he/she can invite a special guest reader. This week A was our Student of the Week and she invited her Grandma to come in and read to us.  One of A's favorite books is Christmas In Wisconsin.  It was all about how Santa delivers toys to the good kids of Wisconsin.  We loved hearing all about Santa in September!  It made us get excited for the holiday season.

Next week Monday, all families with students in grades 1-5 will receive an email with a virtual curriculum night presentation.  This presentation provides important information regarding the curriculum and various procedures for your child’s grade level. Please be sure to review this information and let your child’s teacher know if you have any questions.
Additionally, we had our first PTO meeting of the year this week.  The meeting was well attended and the PTO is off to a great start planning fun activities for the students and families.  Be sure to watch the Thursday folder for additional information from our Thorson PTO. The next PTO meeting will be held on Monday, October 14 at 7:00 p.m.  Mark your calendars and plan to join us!

Newsletter-Our Week In Review- September 9th-13th

Dear Families,
Your kindergartner continues to be busy!  In Communication Arts we are  and learning the star words “I” and “am”. Please practice these words with your child as they will be reviewed and tested throughout the school year.  We have been working on the story The Recess Queen.  We learned how to make predictions, retell the story, infer, and answer questions about the story.  Here is a video about the story.

In writing, we have been working on drawing a picture and labeling what it is.  You may see some invented spelling for our labels.  This is perfectly okay!  Students are learning to hear the sounds in the words and writing what they hear down.  There will be plenty of time for us to have the correct spelling at another time!

Our poem this week is called A Sticky Situation.  I am sure that you have heard this poem at home this week!  We created actions, found letters,  and found rhyming words.   Ask your kindergartner to say it to you!

During math we have been working on identifying objects to 5.  We have also been working on looking at our special math tool- the five frame.  A home connection was sent out.  Feel free to work on this with your child if you see fit.

Reminders:
• Remember to have your child wear shoes that they are able to take on and off independently.
• Make sure your child has a daily healthy snack!
• Please practice zipping jackets and tying shoes with your child.

If you ever have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me.

Take care,
Mrs. Rocky

September Calendars

Hi Families,

Yesterday your child brought home a September calendar.  On the back was a calendar that had a lot of fun activities to do.  It says on the calendar that it is homework BUT no need to turn any of the work in.  The activities are simply fun things to do with your child- if you choose.  I know many families have activities in the evening to do so I do not want you to worry about these activities.

If you have any questions, please let me know!

Thanks so much!
Mrs. Rocky
