Newsletter-Our Week In Review

Dear Parents,

This week we talked about the tricky y spelling pattern.  We found out that when we see the y at the end of the word, it could make the long i sound like in fly or the long e sound like in bunny.  We sorted out words that sound like fly and words that sounded like bunny.  Tricky work!   If you have been keeping up with us, your student should know all 54 words. If not, the goal is that by the end of kindergarten your child knows all 54.  We continue to review all words and assess through the year! Please continue to work on these words with your child.  Because of our busy schedule, I only test Star Words on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

The story this week was The Easter Bunny's Assistant.  It was such a funny story about the Easter Bunny and a skunk who gets a little too excited about getting ready for Easter! While listening to the story, students were working on the strategies of cause & effect, identifying the problem and solution, retelling, inference, making connections, and stating their opinion.  Ask your kindergartner what their favorite part in the story was.

This week's poem is called "Plant Song"  We created movements, looked for rhyming words, and sorted out word families.  I am sure you have heard this poem often at home!

In math we finished up our unit on identifying/ making teen numbers and finding various ways to make numbers up to 10.  Our next unit in math will be on telling time.  Your kindergartner should be able to tell time to the hour.

No School TOMORROW -  March 24th

We have had a number of students being dropped off in the morning before 8:35am

Please note student supervision begins at 8:35am - Parents MUST remain with their student until 8:35am

Student pick-up is 3:35pm

Girls Running Club at Thorson - Open to all girls in grades 3rd-5th. Running Club will meet Tuesdays and Thursday beginning on April 20th after school. See flyer for additional information and to sign-up.

Vision Screening: Volunteers Needed -  Vision Screening will be taking place on April 4th from 9:00am-1:00pm for our kindergarten, 2nd, and 4th grade students. We are looking for 5 volunteers to help out with the screening. Click here to sign-up.

Jaguar Jumpstart

March’s Character Traits is “Honesty”.  Please print our Honesty Statement and post at home. Remind your children that we practice our character traits at school and at home.

PBIS School Wide Goal

Our teachers and staff have been teaching and reinforcing to your children what it means to be a “Positive Jaguar”; being Respectful, Responsible, and Ready to Learn. These expectations are also reinforced during our Jaguar Jumpstart Monday Meetings.

This school year our PBIS Leadership Team developed school wide expectations for lining up and entering the building after recess:

1. When the bell rings, stop playing, pick-up playground equipment, and line up
2. Form a single file line
3. Enter the building at a voice level zero

Each grade level can earn one “cube” each recess period when these expectations are met. If the entire school earns 350 “cubes” before June 2nd the entire school will earn a field trip to see a movie at the Rivoli Theater. Additional information will be coming.

Bus 307- Bus 307 is at max capacity.  Riteway will not be allowing any students to go home with friends as a guest rider.  Other arrangements will have to be made if a friend is going home with a student that rides that bus.

Thorson Health Room Volunteer Calendar – Looking for volunteers who can clean scrapes and cuts, take a temperature, monitor kids as they rest or call home to have a sick child picked up early. Tony DeRosa the principal from Webster Transitional School will be discussing the transition from elementary to middle school  at the

PTO meeting on Monday, March 13th.

Thorson’s Annual Science Fair -  Does a toy car travel faster on a track made of sandpaper, plastic or carpet? Or, does Big League Chew, Bazooka Bubble Gum, or Trident blow a bigger bubble? Or, how do animals survive in the winter. Consider Participating in the annual Thorson Science Fair. What is Junior Achievement?

Junior Achievement is the world's largest organization dedicated to giving young people the knowledge and skills they need to own their economic success. JA programs are delivered by corporate and community volunteers, and provide relevant, hands-on experiences that give students from kindergarten through high school knowledge and skills in financial literacy, work readiness and entrepreneurship.  www.ja.org

What would I do?

• Lead five hands-on activities in the class.  Each lesson is 30 to 45 minutes. 
• All materials are age appropriate for students, colorful, fun and provided by Junior Achievement.
• Teachers are present in the classroom to assist and provide support.
• Help students understand that skills learned in school are vital to their future.
• Arrange a convenient teaching schedule with your teacher

Newsletter-Our Week In Review

Dear Parents,

Happy Spring!  Happy end to quarter 3!  Can you believe that we only have 1 quarter left of kindergarten?!?

All of our star words have been introduced!  Hooray!  If your child has been keeping up with us, they should be able to read all 54 star words.  We reviewed these words in the stories, poems, and writing we did this week.  We continue to review all words and assess through the year! Please continue to work on these words with your child.  Please remember that I test Star Words on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

We read 4 Dr. Seuss stories this week.  We read Cat in the Hat, One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish, Green Eggs and Ham, and Fox in Socks.  We created a book with small projects and rhyming words for each story.

In writing, we are continuing to work on our writing unit on All About Stories.  Students will be expected to write a story about something they are experts at.  This story can be on a person, place, thing, animal, sports, etc.

In math we are working on different ways to make a number.  Students have been practicing this skill by playing Shake, Shake, Shake.  We are able to find ways to make 5,6,7,8,9,&10 by adding two numbers together.

Reminders:
No school on Friday!  Teachers will be having professional development meetings and be working on progress reports.

Please return your permission slip and $1 for the field trip to the play.

Monday is Jaguar Jump Start!  Please wear your Thorson gear or blue on Monday!
