Our friend Carter can't seem to find his black camouflage slippers.  Please check your child's backpack to see if they were taken by mistake.  BIG reward of a sticker for your sticker chart of you can find them!  :)

Leap Day!

Today we talked about Leap Year during our morning meeting.  Our friends at Wonderopolis (click on the link to check it out!) told us all about the history of Leap Year. 

Did you know that if you are born on February 29th you only have a birthday once every four years?  In the Wonderopolis video today we meet a man who was born on February 29th and was celebrating his 21st birthday.  That means he is really 84 years old!  It was a little hard for us to understand this! 

To celebrate Leap Year, we got to wear PJ's to school.  It was like we were so excited to come to school it looks like we "Lept" out of bed!

3rd Grade Buddies

Yesterday we were able to work with our 3rd grade buddies in the computer lab.  We used the program MaxWrite which is like Microsoft Works for kids.  Together with our buddies we picked a picture and then we wrote a story about it.  It was lots of fun to think up some made up stories.  We plan on sharing these stories the next time we are with Mrs. Buser's class. 

Hard Workers

These friends worked really hard together the other day to create a fantastic castle!  They used all of the blocks that were in the bucket.  Way to go friends!

Pajama Day!

We are having pajama day tomorrow to celebrate Leap Year!  Wear your favorite pajamas to school tomorrow!  If you want to bring slippers to wear, you can!  Be sure to bring regular shoes to wear outside of the classroom.   If you don't want to wear pajamas you don't have to. 

Read Across America Day

Friday is Dr. Seuss's Birthday!  To celebrate we will be having a big Read Aloud at school. If you are able to volunteer and read to a small group, please be sure to go to the VolunteerSpot link on the left hand of this blog.  We would love to have you join us!

Pictures from George Washington's Birthday

We celebrated George Washington's Birthday on Wednesday.  We made some very handsome looking President Washingtons. 

We found out that President Washington NEVER had wooden teeth.  His dentures were made from elephant tusks, hippopotamus tusks, and even human teeth!

We found out that President Washington is on the quarter and the dollar bill.

We found out that President Washington was the first president of the United States.

We found out that President Washington is on Mt. Rushmore.

Dear Parents,

We hope that all of you have a great long weekend with your kindergartner!  Thank you all so much for making arrangements so teachers could have some professional development time on Friday afternoon.  We hope that you make some time to cozy up with a good book! 

During Guided Reading this week we focused on the skill of distinguishing fantasy/reality.  We did this by reading the trade book The Bear Snores On.   It is a very cute story where many animals come and visit bear to get out of the harsh winter weather.  These animals end up having a party, while bear snored on.  Ask your kindergartner what their favorite part was.

We continued to work on reviewing the letters and sounds of l, b, and e.  Please continue to work on these with your child.  We also worked on blending the letters –in and –ip to make various rhyming words.  Many children noticed that by changing one letters makes an entirely new word! 

During science this week, we are continuing to look at animals.  We are investigating what makes animals the same and what makes animals different.  This week we focused on the different body parts that animals have.  We noticed that some animals have wings, fins, claws, and fur.  Look around your neighborhood and check out the different animals and see if you can identify the body parts that animals have.

A special occasion is coming up at Thorson!  It is Read Across America Day!  We will be celebrating Dr. Seuss’s birthday on Friday, March 2^nd.  Parents may come to their child’s classroom and read a book with a small group of students.  Please bring your own book to read.  However, if you do need a book, please feel free to contact your child’s teacher.

***REMINDER!  This weekend is the Thorson Carnival!  Come between 11am-3pm for Fun and Games all to support Thorson!  There are some special auction items to bid on, raffles, and even a chance to win lunch with a teacher of your choice!  Come and join the fun!

Classroom Project

Riveredge Nature Center

Today the kindergartners had the opportunity to meet with Miss Lauren from Riveredge.  She talked to us how animals prepare themselves for winter.  One way that we found out is that rabbit and deer grow thick winter coats.  We had a chance to even see and touch deer and rabbit pelts!  Our kindergartners also had the chance to walk around the nature center to see if they were able to find any signs that a deer or a rabbit has been there.  Ask your kindergartner what they can look for to see if any animals have been in the area!

Computer Lab With Our 3rd Grade Buddies

We went to the Computer Lab with our 3rd Grade Buddies.  We used the program Kidspiration to sort different types of animals.  Our third grade buddies helped us to use this new program and to help us spell the animal words.  We loved this new program!
