Newsletter-our week in review

We cannot believe it is the end of October!  The students are looking forward to the Halloween parade on Friday at 3:00 p.m.  It has been a fun tradition for many years. All students can participate and visitors are welcome to watch in the halls. Please let teachers know if you are planning to take your child home following the parade. Thank you!

 

Com. Arts:

We have been reviewing all of our letter sounds, star words, and the number and color words.  We continue to discuss characters in a story and how to ask questions? The students continue to work on reading-to-self using their book boxes or bags and reading with a partner. We have integrated Halloween stories into our reading, writing, and art projects.

 

Math:

We continue to work on graphing, shapes, number writing, and estimation.  Students are also learning about number stories and symmetry. We encourage counting out objects at home (1-50) on a regular basis.

 

Science:

Weather, Earth, hibernation of animals, and the changes taking place in plants are a focus for us. We also have noticed the change in temperatures that are causing a need for warmer clothing. Just a reminderthat the students are outside 3x's a day for 20 min. recesses.  Thank you for helping your child practice with zippers and sequence of dressing at home (mittens or gloves last).

 

Reminder:

Friday, October 31st - Halloween party (2:30pm) and parade (3:00pm)

Friday, November 7th - NO SCHOOL! (Report Card Day)

Wear green on Thursday!

As many of you have probably read in the Thursday Folder, Thorson will be celebrating Kabuki Syndrome Awareness Day on Thursday.  Kabuki Syndrome is a very rare disease which can cause an extensive list of issues including cognitive delays, hearing loss, heart defects, immune deficiencies which can cause sickness more often and auto immune issues where the body attacks blood cells. 

One of our own Throson family members has been diagnosed with Kabuki Syndrome and for her we are asking everyone to wear GREEN. The Pape and Kelley family will be providing green popcorn after lunch for each student to take home to their families.  

  On October 30th, Kelley’s Market will also be donating 5% of every purchase directly to the Johns Hopkins Research on Kabuki Syndrome. Also, they will be asking our customers for the next month to “round up” their order total and every penny that is “rounded up” be given to this research.

Please help us support her by wearing GREEN and shopping at Kelley's Market on Thursday.

Dear families,

I just want to say thank you again for all the love and support you have given my family these past few weeks. We so appreciate all of the cards, gifts, and well wishes. 

I was able to stop in today for a bit to see the kiddos. It was so good to see all of them. They were so sweet to Baby Evan and I loved all the hugs they gave me.

Weekly Newsletter- Our Week in Review

Dear Parents,

We had an exciting week in Kindergarten!  We enjoyed going to the pumpkin farm.  It was fun to take a hay ride out to the pumpkin patch to pick our pumpkins.  Then, we fed the goats and went through a corn maze.  On Thursday, we saw a red fire truck and met real firefighters.  They told us all about fire safety. Lastly, we are planting bulbs outside on Friday.  Hopefully, we will see flowers next spring.

 

Com. Arts:

We have had a review week of letters and star words. The theme was "Getting Along". Our book this week was Simon and Molly plus Hester.  We are working on sequencing story events using retelling cards. We talked about how to identify characters and how to ask questions. We also continue to work on phoneme blending and isolation.

 

Writing:

We write every day and are working on spaces, lower case letters in the proper places, punctuation,and letter size. Most students are still copy writing and are starting to apply beginning sounds to words.

 

Math:

We are working on teen numbers, patterns, and estimating.  Ask your child to tell you several teen numbers:  (11,12,13,14,15,16,17,18,19).

 

Science: 

We are working in our Earth science journals and our space books.  Our moon book continues to go home and is looking awesome!

 

 

Reminders:

• Next Friday, October 31st is our Halloween party and parade. Our day will follow the same routine until about 2:20. We will then have some organized activities and prepare for the parade at 3:00.  You are welcome to watch the parade in the halls. If you take your child home on that day PLEASE let the teacher know. The children should bring their costumes in a bag to school and be able to change somewhat independently.Please no guns or swords.

 

• Don’t forget to pack your child a healthy snack each day.

Newsletter- Our Week in Review

Dear Parents,

We have had a very busy week in Kindergarten.  “Donuts with Dad” was a great success!  Hopefully, you were able to visit our wonderful Book Fair.  Students did a good job on the state test, PALS.  They also have been working really hard on their Halloween art projects.

 

Com. Arts:

Our theme this week was, "What Is a Friend?" We read the big book, Friends All Around.

The focus was on listening comprehension. Students learned about how friends are the same and different.  Our letter was "Pp" and the star words were: go, are, and play.

 

Math:

We have worked on counting, money, number writing, graphing, and estimating. Our math journals review and reinforce math skills. 

 

Social Studies:

We continue to do "Special Person" and learn about our friends through pictures, stories, and visitors. 

Reminders:

 

Field Trip:  Our field trip is on Monday, October 20, 2014.  Please, dress your child for the weather!  We will be outside rain or shine.  Also, bring a labeled bag for the pumpkin.  Students will need a bag lunch with a drink that day too.  

 

Don’t forget to sign up for conferences online.

Newsletter- Our Week In Review

Dear Parents,

We are learning every day in Kindergarten!  Ask your child what he or she learned today!  

 

Comm. Arts: 

This week our theme was "Learning aboutFriends" and the big book was What Do You Like? Our letter was "Ss" and the star words were:  see, mom, and dad. Our concept words are color and number words.  We worked on opposites,asking questions, and identifying characters in a story.  

 

Math:

We continue to do number writing, counting, and learning more about teen numbers.  Our math journals are a tool to review and record skills. 

 

Science:

We continue our unit on "Earth Science".  The Moon Bag is going home with a new student every night.  Thank you for helping your child draw the moon.  Our moons are looking spectacular!

 

Social Studies:

We are working on positive behavior at school.  We encourage students to be kind and helpful.  We continue to review the importance of listening and following the rules.       

 

Reminders:

 

Tuesday, October 14th is Donuts with Dad.  Don’t forget to visit the Book Fair with your Dad!

 

Monday, October 20th is our field trip to Basse’sPumpkin Farm.

Newsletter- our week in review

Dear Parents,

 

Happy October!

 

We can't believe it’s the second month of school.The fall is a great time for a field trip to the pumpkin farm. If you haven’t yet, please send your permission slip and money back to school.

 

Comm. Arts:

This is our review week in our unit on "Families".  Our theme book is Peter's Chair.  Students learned that families grow and change.   We continue to work on text structure and making predictions.  We have also reviewed the letters "M,m" and "A,a". Students practiced their sounds and how to write them.  Our star words are:  “a” and “today”. We are sending small books home each week for your child to practice reading.  It’s a good way to review star words and work on fluency.

 

Math:

We are working on recognizing numbers 1-20, patterns, and coin sorting. These skills are taught using literature, games, journals, and mathmanipulatives. 

 

Writing;

We write daily using our journals.  Students are learning to form letters and copy-write. We encourage everyone to apply letter sounds and to use their star words to help write words.  It is extremely important to review individual letter sounds and the star words on a daily basis at home.

 

Science:

We are still working on "Day and Night" activities and using literature to support these ideas.  A Moon Bag is coming home for students to observe and draw the moon.  One student will take the bag home and then, bring it back for the next student.  Don’t forget to put all the materials back in the Moon bagbefore you bring it back to school.

 

Reminders:

 

Pumpkin Farm-Oct. 20th:   Thank you to all of the parents that volunteered for our field trip.  Unfortunately, we can only take so many parents on the bus.  If you would still like to go to the pumpkin farm, you can meet us there.  You will just have to pay to get in.  We can always use extra help!

Please have your child dress for the weather that day by wearing a jacket and comfortable shoes.  Also, bring a sturdy bag for a pumpkin.  In addition, your child needs to bring a packed lunch with a drink on Mon., Oct. 20th.  We will be eating lunch in our rooms that day.  Thank you!
