Newsletter-Our Week In Review
September 21, 2017
Dear Families,
We have had another successful week in Kindergarten! Thank you for all of your help in preparing your children for the day.
This week during Reading, we have been working on the story, Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse. In this story we worked on the skill of making predictions, retelling, character identification, inference, and opinion writing. Ask your kindergartner what their favorite part in the story was!
This week we have been working on the letters, c,a, d, and g. We have been able to make their sounds and identify words that start with these letters. We have also been working on our Star Words, “we & today”. Please be sure to practice these words with your child.
During Math we have been working on number identification 1-5. We practiced this by playing a bingo game. The kiddos loved it! We also started looking closely at the shapes circle, square, rectangle, and triangle. Students needed to identify objects in the classroom that were that shape.
Reminders:
* Continue to send a healthy snack for the afternoon with your child- no cookies, chips, or candy.

Special Guest Reader
E is our Student of the Week this week. As a part of Student of the Week, E gets to invite a special guest reader to our classroom. E invited her mom, sister, and brother to read a story to us. We heard the story Ariel's Wedding. We loved hearing about how Ariel got married to Prince Eric.

Newsletter- Our Week In Review
Dear Families,
Your kindergartner continues to be busy! In Communication Arts we are and learning the star words “happy” and “am”. Please practice these words with your child as they will be reviewed and tested throughout the school year. We have been working on the story The Recess Queen. We learned how to make predictions, retell the story, infer, and answer questions about the story. Here is a video about the story.
In writing, we have been working on drawing a picture and labeling what it is. You may see some invented spelling for our labels. This is perfectly okay! Students are learning to hear the sounds in the words and writing what they hear down. There will be plenty of time for us to have the correct spelling at another time!
Our poem this week is called Apples. I am sure that you have heard this poem at home this week! We created actions, found letters, found rhyming words, and told our poem to other classrooms. Ask your kindergartner to say it to you!
During math we have been practicing our numbers 1-5 and sorting objects in a variety ways. We have also been playing a game called "Match it" ask your kindergartner all about it!
Reminders:
• Remember to have your child wear shoes that they are able to take on and off independently.
• Make sure your child has a daily healthy snack!
• Please practice zipping jackets and tying shoes with your child.

Welcome back, everyone! Our 2017-18 school year is off to a great start! Our year started with several new things. First, we have a brand new play structure for the students to use. We began our first day of school with an all-school ribbon-cutting ceremony for our new playground! We are so thankful to the PTO TAG (Thorson Athletic Grounds) Committee, led by Brad and Kristi Worth, for all of their hard work on raising funds, selecting an awesome playground structure, and finding volunteers to help install the new playground. The students absolutely love the new playground structure and are having a blast playing on it at each recess!
Second, we have several new staff members that have joined our wonderful Thorson Team. We welcomed 6 new teachers and 2 new support staff. We added a half-day section of 4K and a fourth section of 1st grade due to high enrollment in these grade levels. Thorson welcomes Ms. Libby Welhouse (4K pm section), Ms. Amanda Hoeppner (1st Grade), Ms. Katie Moore (1st Grade), Mrs. Erin Staffaroni (1st Grade), Ms. Claire Tocco (3rd Grade), Mrs. Kayla Bailey (special education), Mrs. Jina Gudex (paraprofessional), and Mrs. Jean Bieszk (Health Room Aide). We also welcome Mrs. Lisa Vondra, who is the long-term sub in 4th grade for Mrs. Schwanz.
Finally, Thorson received some building upgrades this summer and some room moves. We moved our 4K and EC rooms to larger rooms and renovated them with new flooring, paint, and cabinets. The new spaces are fantastic and are just the perfect size for our youngest students who need lots of space to move and play. Due to these moves, we also moved the Art Room. It is now between the Kindergarten and 1st Grade classrooms. This room also got new flooring, new paint, and tables. Due to the addition of the new section of 1st grade, we also moved the special education resource room to the back of the building next to 5th grade where the Occupational Therapy (OT) room had been and moved OT to our former workroom. In addition to all of these room moves, our building got all new energy-efficient lights and exterior cameras. The building looks wonderful!

Positive Jaguars - Thorson staff is always on the look-out for students who are being Respectful, Responsible, and Ready to Learn,when we spot a student exhibiting these traits , the student earns a “PAW”. The student’s name will be announced during Morning Announcements, their name is added to the PBIS bulletin board, and they get a paw stamp to remind them to tell you that they earned a PAW! Reaching out to a Thorson Family in Need – One of our Early Childhood students, Sully M. recently experienced acute liver failure, He has endured over 12 surgeries this summer and is still in ICU at Children’s Hospital. Friends have set-up a Go-Fund Me Page to help with expenses the family is incurring. Any help the Thorson families can give is greatly appreciated. School Absences/Late Arrivals: Whenever a student will not be in school or will be late to school as scheduled, the office must be notified for every absence so that accurate attendance records can be kept and that we know your child is safe when they don’t arrive to school. Please call (262-376-6766) before 9:00am and leave the student’s first and last name, teacher name, and the reason for the absence or delayed arrival time. For your convenience, the school does have voicemail to provide you the opportunity to leave a message before and after school hours.
If your child will be late to school and would like a hot lunch, please call the attendance line by 9:00am (262-376-6766) and let us know which option they would like. This will help ensure enough food is prepared. Thank you!
Homework Request: If your child is absent and you would like to request homework, please contact your child’s teacher by email.
Traffic and Pedestrian Safety: Please remember that upon entering the parking lot; there is one line for dropping off students (closest to the school) and another for driving through and/or parking (closest to Keup Road). Please watch the Thorson staff member directing cars and pedestrians. When dropping off, students may exit the car, one car before the crosswalk and one car after the crosswalk. Please do not drop off your child somewhere else in the drop-off lane and have them walk behind or between cars. The crosswalk must remain open. Parents, please model safe behavior and also use the crosswalk. Please see the attached for a detailed map and other directions – Thank you!

BOX TOP COLLECTION CONTEST! - Welcome back to another school year! Ice Cream you Scream we all Scream for Ice Cream ... Class Contest! -Have your child bring in clipped box tops to their classroom! Every cent counts, each box top is worth 10 cents to the school. Attached is a sheet, feel free to tape your box tops to your sheet. Make sure the expiration date is current and shows. Put your grade and teacher's name on any box tops turned in. You will also receive a Ziploc bag with more information that you may keep them in at home. Note: this year we are only collecting box tops. The labels for education program is ending in 2018 so we will not collect these.
The first contest collection is through October 15th, although teachers will turn them into the office on the 15th of each month. The winning classroom for the October 15th collection will win an ice cream party. There will also be a spring collection with the same classroom prize! Collect box tops throughout the entire year!
Ask your family, neighbors and friends to collect for you! It's easy and makes a big difference if every student is involved and asks more people for help.
Watch the display to see where your classroom is at each month! Last year around $800 was raised Let's see if we can achieve more this year! In past years, we raised over $3,000 from box top money.

Welcome to Kindergarten!
I am so glad that all of you are here. The kindergartners have had a great first couple of days of school. I am so proud of them!
This week we are learning about the rules and routines of kindergarten. We have been talking a lot about what it means to be a Positive Jaguar. These three rules are: Be Respectful. Be Responsible. Be Ready to Learn. Please be sure to go over them with your kindergarten student.
A few reminders for the upcoming week:
1. If you have any change in your going home plans, be sure to send a note with your child. If you do not send a note, we will follow the plans you decided upon at the start of the year.
2. Be sure that your child has a snack to eat at our afternoon snack time. (We will have a morning snack provided for them) Please remind your child where it will be for them. Many friends were unsure of where their snack was.
3. If your child wants a water bottle for the classroom, feel free to bring one. Be sure to put your child's name on it!

Morning Snack Request
Dear families,
Thank you so much for all of your support these first few days of kindergarten.
The kiddos have been complaining that they are hungry in the morning. I would like to start a morning snack in addition to your afternoon snack. (Please continue to send in the afternoon snack) It would be appreciated if families could donate a box of Cheerios, mini pretzels, or Chex Mix etc. for the kiddos to have in the morning. 3oz Dixie Cups are also appreciated as well. Please remember to make these snacks peanut free!

Happy First Day!
You did it! You made it through day one!
Thank you to all my parents for being brave and saying good bye outside on the playground this morning. I can only imagine how hard it may be to let your baby go with someone else. Know that I don't take your trust for granted.
Relationships are key- I will work hard at building one with you.
Communication is an important part to building relationships. I will do my best to keep you informed on what is happening at school and during our day (here on our classroom blog and through various other forms of communication) You have my phone number at school and my email address. Please feel free to contact me if you ever have questions. I will do my best to get back to you in a timely manner.
I appreciate when parents advocate for their child. As long as we can both listen to each other, I know that we can find a solution that will work for everyone.
Please be patient with me. There are 23 new awesome and amazing people to get to know socially, emotionally, and academically. It might take awhile before I know what I can do to make your child's kindergarten year a great one.
I want your kiddo to have fun and to succeed.
I really do love my job. I couldn't imagine another place to be.
