Newsletter- Our Week in Review

January 29, 2015

Dear Parents,
Today, we headed to Hartford for our field trip.  Everyone enjoyed our play, “The Hungry Caterpillar”!  Ask your child, what their favorite part was and why?

Com. Arts:
This was a review week and our theme was "Animal Homes".  We have geared art, literature and discussions around the topic.  We are reviewing the letters "F,f" and "O,o" and the words "has" and "look".  We also are working on ending and middle sounds and introducing both vowel sounds.  Our book for this theme was Mole and Baby Bird, and the folktale, "The Coyote and the Turtle”. The students are enjoying reading to themselves and with partners on a daily basis along with Guided Reading.  We continue to encourage all students to take home the small classroom readers on a 2-3 day basis.

Math:
The students are working on calculators, number writing, measuring, and counting by fives.  We offer many opportunities to work in teams and with partners within the classroom.  One way is playing games to reinforce these skills.  Games also help with sharing and taking turns.

Writing:
We are writing on a daily basis in journals and related projects.  Letter formation is very important.  We also focus on neatness, pencil grip, punctuation, and spaces.  Students are learning to sound-out their words by applying phonemic skills.  We encourage your child to practice at home as well. Thank you!

Reminders:
Please send a small snack with your child to eat later in the day!

Riveredge is at Thorson for our “Oh Deer” program on Wednesday, February 4th.  Students will be going outside rain or shine.

Valentine’s Party is on Friday, February 13th from 2:30-3:30pm.

Thank you for all of your support in Kindergarten!!

Label your cold weather gear!

Dear families,

Please label your child's cold weather gear!  We have lots of pants and things that look similar.  Often children don't know if a certain pair of snow pants or gloves belong to them.

Thank you for your help!

Take care,
Mrs. Rocky

Newsletter-Our Week In Review

January 22, 2015

Dear Parents,

In the month of January, please continue to read to your child and have your child read to you!  We encourage students to take home small books weekly to practice their reading with an adult.

Comm. Arts:
Our theme this week is "Animal Babies".  Our letter is "F,f" and star words are:  she and he.  We continue to work on applying phonics and sight words in our reading and writing. Also, we are working on fluency and comprehension.  The big book this week is Animal Babies and the leveled readers are:  Animals and Their Babies, Animal Babies, and Baby Animals.  We continue to work on the beginning, middle and end of a story.

Writing:
The students continue to write on a daily basis in journals or in books designed to coordinate with what we are working on in class.  We are emphasizing correct letter formations, punctuation, spaces, and phonemic spelling.  Please encourage your child to write at home at any time.

Math:
All students are working on addition, making patterns, shapes, writing numbers, and counting by ones, fives, and tens.  They enjoy math games and working with partners.  We encourage students to practice their number writing and look for numbers in their environment.

Reminders:
Please send shoes every day for your child to put on during the school day!  Their snow boots are only for outside.  They also need to wear or bring gym shoes on their gym day.

Please note: Friday, January 23rd is a record day for teachers. There will be NO SCHOOL.

Thursday, January 29th is the play, “The Hungry Caterpillar” during our school day.

Thank you for your support.
