Newsletter-Our Week In Review- March 22-25

Dear Parents,

This week we worked on the -ang spelling pattern.   Words like hang, rang, and sang are included in this spelling pattern.  The students practiced building the words and reading the words.  We looked for the words in our stories and poems.  This week we also practiced the star words "came" and "saw".  We continue to practice these words daily.  Please be sure to practice these words with your child!

The story this week was Piggie Pie  It is a very silly story about Gritch the Witch who wanted to eat some piggie pie but first needed to find some pigs.  Gritch went to the farm but noticed she couldn't find any pigs!  Where were they?  Ask your kindergartner all about the story.   While listening to the story, students worked on identifying the problem and solution, retelling, inference, making connections, and stating their opinion.  Ask your kindergartner what their favorite part in the story was.

We work on a poem each week.  This week's poem is called "Spring Celebration"  We created movements, looked for rhyming words, and sorted out word families.  I am sure you have heard this poem often at home!  

In writing, we are continuing to work on our opinion pieces.  We continue to work on using the strategy of OREO when stating their opinion.  O is for opinion  R is for reason E is for extra reason O is for stating the opinion once again.  This week we worked on solving a problem in our school and why we think it needs to be solved.

A Note from the Principal:
Dear Thorson Families,

We are excited to announce that the results are in from the Stuff the Bus Food Drive and we collected 4,537 pounds of food, which is an increase of 400 pounds from last year. Thanks again to all who participated in supporting this great cause!

In preparation for the final quarter of the school year, we have made some slight adjustments to the use of Canvas for elementary students.  At the start of the year, we utilized Canvas to provide access to instruction for students at home and in person.   We will continue to do so, however, the content a student/parent sees in Canvas will be determined by the type of instruction they are receiving:  virtual or in person.

Due to traffic issues and safety concerns, cars may only turn right out of the parking lot during drop-off and pick up times. This is due to the increased traffic and the amount of parked cars on the road that limit visibility. Please adhere to the directions on the signage at the parking lot exit. Thank you for your attention to this to keep everyone safe!

As we approach spring break, please continue to remain vigilant about Covid-19 mitigation efforts. We know everyone has been working hard to stay safe and we appreciate your efforts. I hope that you all have a restful and safe break from school. School will resume on Monday, April 5. This will be the start of 4th quarter and we will kick it off with a Thorson spiritwear day! We will see you all after break!

Thorson's Grils Running Club
Ms. Kestell, Mrs. Kowalkowski, and Mrs. Hartling are back in business this year!  Regardless of experience, we are encouraging all interested girls grades 3-5 to join us for another fun-filled year of GIRLS RUNNING CLUB!  The goal of this club is to empower young girls, both physically and mentally.  Please see this flyer for details. 

Masks- Please send extra masks to school with your student. Students go out for recess daily, and with the weather, masks get wet and need to be changed throughout the school day. 

Chromebooks-Chromebooks are used everyday in the classroom.  Please make sure your student has their charged chromebook daily.

Absent/ Late Arrival- If you are going to be late or absent, please call the Thorson attendance line at 262-376-6766 before 9:00 a.m.  Please state your students first and last name, teacher, and the reason for the absence.If your student will be taking hot lunch they will need to login to their Google form to make their lunch choice or notify the office. When reporting your child absent due to illness, please describe their symptoms, this information is critical for our district health staff and tracking purposes. 

PAWSitively PTO Give a High Five Show your appreciation for a Thorson staff member by giving them a written HIGH FIVE and support the PTO at the same time! For as little as $5, submit a written HIGH FIVE--a shout out, compliment, or thank you--that will be posted to our Thorson PTO Facebook page on Fridays as well as on display in the Thorson Elementary staff lounge. Fill out the simple Google form and follow the link to pay through PayPal! Next PTO Meeting: April 12, 2021 PTO Agenda Meeting Minutes  YMCA before and after school programs Click Here for Information on our Before and After School Programs From the Cedarburg School District: The CSD Summer Academy returns to an IN-PERSON environment for the 2021 summer!  With appropriate health and safety precautions/mitigations, Cedarburg students can once again take part in fun and enriching summer learning opportunities at a free or minimal cost. The Summer Academy for Grades 5K - 11 students (based on 2020-21 grade) includes:  Summer Enrichment Academy (SEA) - a wide range of high-interest and activity-based classes (crafts, cooking, games, technology, robotics, music, sports and more) Summer Time Extension Program (STEP) - academic support in reading and math (offered to students based on teacher recommendations).  The Summer Academy runs 4 mornings per week (Monday through Thursday) for 4 hours per day (8:00 AM - Noon) over 4 weeks. SAVE THE DATES! 1st Session - June 21-24 & June 28-July 1 No Classes the Week of July 5 2nd Session - July 12-15 & July 19-22  More than 1,000 students typically participate in this program and classes can fill up fast. Learn more about enrollment and course registration here.  Afternoon wrap-around care is offered  through the Kettle Moraine YMCA (Feith Family Ozaukee Branch).

Rock Your Socks Tomorrow!

Tomorrow is the last day to "STUFF THE BUS"!!

 

A Note from the Principal:
Dear Thorson Families,

I continue to be amazed by Thorson’s generosity and willingness to support our schools and the greater community.  This week’s Stuff the Bus Food Drive is yet another example of kindness and the giving spirit that we teach and reinforce here at school.  THANK YOU for all of the donations we have received!  The collection bins have been overflowing since the first day of the drive. You can still bring in non-perishable items to donate tomorrow. Volunteers will be going from school to school tomorrow to collect all of the donated items. Thank you again for your continued support!

We are excited to announce that our students have met yet another schoolwide PBIS challenge goal by earning Cedarburg Pride tickets. Students earn these tickets by being respectful, responsible, and ready to learn. We are so proud of them! They continue to be positive jaguars in this challenging school year. All students will be participating in our all-school reward for meeting this goal. Next week, each class will have game time, either inside or outside. The students are excited about this fun reward!

School is in session next week, Monday through Thursday.  Friday, March 26 is a professional development day for teachers and there will be no school that day.  Spring Break runs from March 29 through April 2.  The school will resume on Monday, April 5.  Please make sure that your child is here every day, ready to learn.  These last few months of school are important as far as new learning being introduced, mastery of concepts, and local and state assessments.  We count on your child(ren)’s regular attendance. Every day of learning matters!

Stuff the Bus
Help make a difference for local families in need! Parkview, Thorson, and Westlawn Elementary Schools are working together to STUFF THE BUS with non-perishable items for Saukville Community Food Pantry.
Saukville Community Food Pantry serves over 550 families a year in Ozaukee County. Food Drives, like ours, can help refill the shelves due to the increased use of the pantry during the COVID pandemic.  Items most needed are canned fruits and vegetables, pasta and sauce, rice, peanut butter and jelly, canned chunky soups, Manwich, dry cereal, ketchup, mayonnaise, granola bars, toilet paper, paper towel, Kleenex, soap, shampoo, deodorant, toothpaste, and toothbrushes.
All donated items can be brought into school the week of March 15th-19th. On Friday, March 19th, all donated items will be picked up and delivered to the food pantry!

The story this week was Jamie O'Rourke and The Big Potato.  It is a very silly story about a very lazy man who caught a leprechaun!  While listening to the story, students were working on the strategies of identifying the problem and solution, retelling, inference, making connections, and stating their opinion.  Ask your kindergartner what their favorite part in the story was.

Reminders:
Please have your child's Chromebook charged and ready for the day.  We use our Chromebooks throughout the school day.

It may be a good idea for you all to wipe down your child's Chromebook.  We often see fingerprints and crumbs on the computer!  :(  Bummer!

Please pack TWO snacks for your child.  One snack in the morning and one snack in the afternoon.  Many children are coming to school without a snack.

A Note from the Principal:
Dear Thorson Families,

Happy windy Thursday! Tomorrow, Friday, March 12 is an early release day--students are dismissed at 1:45pm.  Friday, March 26 is a non-student, professional development day for teachers.  Spring Break runs from Saturday, March 27 through Sunday, April 4.  Classes will resume on Monday, April 5.  The 2021-22 CSD Calendar has been approved by the Board of Education.  Please note important dates for the upcoming school year.

Please remind your child(ren) that social distancing, frequent hand-washing and mask-wearing (over chin and nose) is required at all times at school.  We need to remain vigilant about keeping our school environment safe and healthy.  Thank you for your support!

Next week we begin our annual Stuff the Bus Food Drive benefiting the Saukville Community Food Pantry. Last year we collected 4,150 lbs of food, and our goal is to get to 5,000 pounds this year between the three elementary schools! Don’t forget to send in your non-perishable food items all next week!

Thank you so much to many of the families who donated to The Stilt House dinner on Tuesday.  My family enjoyed the shrimp taco dinner.  Yum!  What a treat!  I'm so lucky to work with so many generous families.

Dear Families,

This week we talked about the s blends.   We learned about the st, sm, and sp blends.  We made words and sorted out pictures.  We worked on the star words "if" and "out".  We reviewed these words in the stories, poems, and writing we did this week.  We continue to review all words and assess through the year! Please continue to work on these words with your child.  

The story this week was The Three Billy Goats Fluff.  While reading the story, we practiced the skills of predicting, retelling, making connections, and answering questions.  Ask your kindergartner what his/her favorite part of the story was!  We also read more traditional versions of The Three Billy Goats Gruff.  Ask your kindergartner to compare the two!

In math, we are continuing our work with identifying shapes.  We have learned about many of the 3D shapes.  The students loved learning to draw some of the 3D shapes.  Ask your kindergartner to draw them for you!

Make sure that your kindergartner has two snacks a day- one in the morning and one in the afternoon.  No hangry students!  :)
