Newsletter-Our Week In Review- January 21-24th

Dear Parents,

This week we talked about how the letters -oa work together to make the long o vowel sound.  We sorted out short o words and long o words that had the -oa spelling pattern.  We made words that contained the oa spelling pattern like goat, float, boat.  We also learned the sight words "him" and “his”. We reviewed these words in the stories, poems, and writing we did this week.  We continue to review all words and assess through the year! Please continue to work on these words with your child.

The story this week was Tacky the Penguin.   While listening to the story, students were working on the strategies of visualizing, retelling, inference, making connections, and stating their opinion.  Ask your kindergartner what he/she liked in the story.

In math we are continuing to work on strategies on how to subtract.  We have talked about how we can use counters, how we can draw pictures, and how we can use a number line.

Return your facts about your animal on Monday!

Students should be bringing snow pants, boots, coat, hat, and mittens.  We go outside for recess twice a day.  It is important for our friends to have the proper winter gear.

A Note from the Principal:
Dear Thorson Families,

If you had any doubt, winter is officially here!   Please ensure that your child has proper winter/snow gear at school each day.  Students should have boots, snow pants, a warm coat, a hat, and mittens/gloves.  Students are only allowed to play in the areas off the blacktop if they have boots and snow pants.  We have had a number of students coming to school without proper cold weather gear. The blacktop is often snowy and wet which can lead to wet feet boots are not worn.  You are welcome to have your child leave their snow clothes at school in a bag on their hook, or they can bring them to and from school each day. These items are also helpful in keeping your child warm, even if they choose not to play in the snow.  Remember, we go outside if the air temperature or the windchill are above 0, so make sure your child is prepared to bundle up. We monitor temperatures throughout the day and determine if recess is inside or out for each recess time. Even though it may be below 0 at the beginning of the school day, it often warms up by the lunch or afternoon recess, so please be sure your child is prepared each day.  Thank you for help with this!

Thorson Dad's Club will be hosting its 4th Annual Dodgeball fundraiser at Cedarburg Winter Fest 2/17 at Noon. Please put together a team for your kiddos! We can accommodate up to 10 players per team. You can have adults, and children on the same team.

Great America Reading Program
Thorson is participating in the Great America reading program.  Students (K-5) will be receiving a log and information letter sent home soon from their homeroom teacher. If a student reads six hours at home before Friday, February 15th, he or she will receive a ticket to visit Great America.  Happy Reading!

Box Tops-There will be a final turn in date for this semester of February 15th for the next round of box tops to be due.  The classroom that turns in the most boxtops at that time will have a popcorn party upon the teachers chosen date.
A few things to keep in mind when turning in the box tops - please check the expiration date - if it is dated past what today’s date is we can not use it towards our program because it has expired.  If the date is torn and not 100% visible we can not include this in our count.  There also is a boxtop app on all smart phones that families can upload to than scan there store receipts to earn more credit towards Thorson Box top program.

Cedarbug School District 4K and 5K enrollment and registration for the 2019-20 school year has begun, please go to the district’s website for full details. Step 1 and 2 is for children new to the district.

Hello Community Members and Cedarburg High School Alumni,

Recently a group of alumni convened to explore the idea of adding field turf to our stadium. There was enough initial interest, that this small group of alumnus, have now established a field turf advisory team. The team, consisting of alumni and booster club representatives, is making great progress in organizing a giving campaign. The goal of the campaign is to raise $850,000. If this goal is achieved, Bulldogs will play on turf for the 2019 fall sports season on Alumni Field inside Cedarburg Stadium.  For this goal to become a reality, we need your assistance in soliciting interest to support this campaign through a monetary donation.
The formula for a successful capital campaign includes contributions from local businesses, families of future, current and past users and other philanthropic individuals. Cedarburg has never shied away from a challenge. Our great success is due to the tremendous support from our community. To bring this goal to fruition, it will truly require a team effort. By creating the conditions for contagious contributions to be made, raising $850,000 by March 2019 is an attainable goal.
Please consider making a pledge to the campaign before March 2019. We are relying on your generosity to bring turf to Alumni Field. The turf will bring the stadium to life with so many more activities.

ALL THINGS THORSON! Thursday, January 17, 2019 A Note from the Principal: Greetings Thorson Families! As part of our school wide PBIS initiative, we acknowledge our students for being Respectful, Responsible and Ready to Learn.  We build in school wide celebrations to continue to acknowledge our students and celebrate their success. This year, our school wide celebrations are based on the amount of paws that our students receive.  Every time we earn 25 paws as a school, we put a ping pong ball in our school celebration jar. When the jar is full, we have a school wide celebration. We are excited to announce that we have reached our first school wide celebration.  Way to go Thorson students and staff! On Friday, February 1, each classroom will have a Reading Campout celebration.  Students will be invited to bring one sheet, blanket, or beach towel to make a fort within their classroom and a flashlight.  Some time during the day at the teacher’s discretion, the students will have their short celebration and will be able to make a fort and read in it.  We will also be providing a “S’More Snack” for all students that consists of teddy grahams, mini marshmallows, and chocolate chips. We do have a version that is peanut free, however, if you are not comfortable with your child having this snack for any reason, please reach out to your child’s teacher and/or send an alternative.  Reminders and announcements about this will be coming from your child’s teacher as we get closer to the celebration. We are proud of our students and excited to celebrate them! Way to go Jaguars! We reviewed these words in the stories, poems, and writing we did this week.  We continue to review all words and assess through the year! Please continue to work on these words with your child.

The story this week was Snowmen At Night.   While listening to the story, students were working on the strategies of visualizing, retelling, inference, making connections, and stating their opinion.  Ask your kindergartner what he/she liked in the story.

In writing, we are starting to write nonfiction stories-informational pieces.  We took a look at some nonfiction books and were able to identify some things that these books have.  We noticed that there were labels, captions, an index, a glossary, and a table of contents.  We also noticed that the pictures were teaching us and the words were telling us facts.

In math we are continuing to work on strategies on how to add.  We have talked about how we can use counters, how we can draw pictures, and how we can use a number line.

Special Guest Reader

Our friend C is the Student of the Week.  He invited his dad to read two stories to us today.  C's dad read "Because I Am Your Dad" and "Harold and the Purple Crayon".  We loved it when the daddy monster and son monster were so silly together.  We also loved when Harold drew a lot of windows.  Thank you so much for coming today!

A Visit From Iron- The Police Dog from Mequon

Officer Jake came to visit our classroom today with his police dog, Iron.  We learned that Iron came from Germany and started his training to be a police dog when he was a puppy.  He listens to his commands in German.  Iron works and lives with Officer Jake.  They brought us a special coloring book, police badge, and picture with Iron's picture on it.  Thank you so much for coming!  Ask your kindergartner what his/her favorite part of the presentation was!

Special Guest Reader

J is our Student of the Week.  She invited her mom and her little sister to read two stories to us.  We heard one about Charlie the Dog who had to take a visit to the vet.  We heard another story about Dora visiting the dentist.  We loved both stories!  Thank you so much for coming to visit our classroom!

Thursday, January 10, 2019 A Note from the Principal: Dear Thorson Families, This month we are learning about the character trait of forgiveness.  We kicked off our work with this theme at our Jaguar Jumpstart last Friday.  We explained to the students that forgiveness means letting go of hurt or mad feelings toward another person.  When we forgive, we let go of our hurt feelings and we feel better. The other person involved feels better, too, because we forgive them.  We encourage you to reinforce this concept at home and encourage your child to tell you what they are learning about forgiveness at school. On another note, please remember that spring conferences are now held in February.  These conferences are optional. Please mark down the date of February 21. The story this week was The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats.  While listening to the story, students were working on the strategies of visualizing, retelling, inference, making connections, and stating their opinion.  The children really loved looking at the beautiful illustrations in the book.

To go along with reading the Snowy Day book, we are creating our own big book.  Students are working on writing what Peter did in the snow.  Each table group will illustrate a page and this book will be placed in our Big Book center.  Students will have the opportunity to read the story they created!

Students have been taking the MAPS test. on the Chrome books.  These tests are able to show me what the student already knows and what they need help on.  Remember, that this is the very first time that students are taking this test.  It is just one snapshot as to what they are capable of doing on that particular day.  Parents, you will be receiving these scores when we have completed the testing.  

Reminders:

*Tomorrow is Jaguar Jump Start!  Please wear your Thorson gear or the color BLUE tomorrow!

* Iron the Mequon Police Dog will be visiting us tomorrow.  If you do NOT want your child to participate in this activity, please contact me.  

* Our library time is changing from Tuesday to MONDAY (for next week)  Please have your child return their library book on MONDAY to check out a new book.

Police Dog Comes for A Visit

Dear Families,

This week is "Thank A Police Officer Week"  On friday, we will be getting a visit from the Mequon Police Dog, Iron.  If your child does not feel comfortable or you do not want your child to participate during the time he visits, please contact me.
