A Note from the Principal:
Dear Thorson Families,

Happy Thursday!  We are gearing up for our Winter Carnival which is this Saturday, March 2 from 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.  We are still in need of lots of volunteers. Please help us out by signing up for one of the available volunteer spots so that we can ensure that this is a successful event and is fun for all!  Be sure to come out and join us on Saturday for this fun family event. We hope to see you all there!

We appreciate your help and cooperation with our arrival and dismissal procedures.  Please continue to follow the proper procedures and be extra cautious and patient as streets are narrowed and parking is more limited due to the snow.  We have tried to take care of some of the snow that was blocking access to the sidewalks to assist with this. We will continue to closely monitor our arrival and dismissal times to ensure the safety of all.  We also continue to evaluate and discuss adjustments and improvements to our arrival and dismissal procedures for the future. Thank you for your continued cooperation and support!

Thorson DI Club- Our Thorson DI Club is seeking donations for the Children's Hospital of Wisconsin.  As part of our service learning challenge, we decided as a team,  we would like to brighten a child's stay in the hospital.  We are looking for donations of: new or gently used books, toys(new), puzzles(new), board games(new), playing cards(new), gift cards ($5-15 donations to Target, Amazon, and Walmart), and finally play-doh, markers, crayons, colored pencils.

Carnival Book Nook-  Is looking for gently used books for all ages.  The class that collects the most books at the end of the week wins an ice cream sundae party. 

**The Thorson PTO has voted to cancel this year's Variety Show. While the PTO was able to recently find some parents to Chair the event, it was decided that there wasn't enough time to pull it together, given the large amount of planning and technical expertise involved. Other dates and venues were explored to no avail. PTO will focus on continuing the event next year, assuming help is identified early in the school year. Thank you for your understanding. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to Orrin Gorelick, Gretchen Seymour, Michael Anderson, or Rebecca Baker.

Thorson Dad's Club will be hosting its 4th Annual Dodgeball fundraiser at Cedarburg Winter Fest 2/17 at Noon. Please put together a team for your kiddos! We can accommodate up to 10 players per team. You can have adults, and children on the same team.

Great America Reading Program
Thorson is participating in the Great America reading program.  Students (K-5) will be receiving a log and information letter sent home soon from their homeroom teacher. If a student reads six hours at home before Friday, February 15th, he or she will receive a ticket to visit Great America.  Happy Reading!

Box Tops-We ended the second collection period with a overall total of $3,823 box tops!  We earned us a total of $382.00.  The first collection in October earned the school $673.00.  The total collected this 2018-19 school year is $1,055.00.  There will be a final collection date of May 17 with a popcorn party for the class who collects the most box tops for the remainder of the school year.  So keep on collecting and bringing them into Thorson marked with the student teacher on the bag.  The winners of the popcorn party for ths second collection date are the following classes:
Mrs. Kahn's 4th grade class with 413 box tops.
Mrs. Bohlen's 2nd grade class with 357 box tops.
Mrs. Anderson's 3rd grade class with 304 box tops.

Cedarburg School District:

Long Range Master Plan (LRMP) Building Project News
Details on space layout are being mapped out at this next phase in the process of the LRMP, Design Development (DD).

The initial phase of our LRMP, Schematic Design(SD), wrapped up earlier this month.  It began with a collaboration between educators, teacher groups, staff impacted by the project and a team of local designers from Groth Design Group (GDG). This stage ensured designs reflect the goals of the project. 

Progress on the different stages as well as presentations to the School Board can be found on our website .

SNOW DAYS
The recent polar vortex that hit much of the Midwest resulted in the extremely unusual cancellation of FIVE school days within less than three weeks earlier this year.  Fortunately, the District calendar has sufficient hours of instruction "built-in" so that no time needs to be made up with these canceled school days at this point.

Moderated by Emmy award-winning TV personality Katrina Cravy, this evening will feature a musical performance by Hannah Mrozak (Citizen Queen, American Idol, The Voice) and a conversation with Hannah and Rogers InHealth Specialist Sue McKenzie, regarding a subject in the forefront of all of our minds – Teens coping with stress and anxiety.

Hello Community Members and Cedarburg High School Alumni,

Recently a group of alumni convened to explore the idea of adding field turf to our stadium. There was enough initial interest, that this small group of alumnus, have now established a field turf advisory team. The team, consisting of alumni and booster club representatives, is making great progress in organizing a giving campaign. The goal of the campaign is to raise $850,000. If this goal is achieved, Bulldogs will play on turf for the 2019 fall sports season on Alumni Field inside Cedarburg Stadium. For this goal to become a reality, we need your assistance in soliciting interest to support this campaign through a monetary donation.

The formula for a successful capital campaign includes contributions from local businesses, families of future, current and past users and other philanthropic individuals. Cedarburg has never shied away from a challenge. Our great success is due to the tremendous support from our community. To bring this goal to fruition, it will truly require a team effort. By creating the conditions for contagious contributions to be made, raising $850,000 by March 2019 is an attainable goal.

Please review the attached document and consider making a pledge to the campaign before March 2019. We are relying on your generosity to bring turf to Alumni Field. The turf will bring the stadium to life with so many more activities.

C is our student of the week.  He invited his mom, younger brother and sister, and grandpa to read some stories to us.  We heard the story Don't Press the Button and a Little Critter Story called Bye Mom and Dad.  We loved both of them!  Thank you so much for coming!

Newsletter-Our Week In Review- February 25th-March 1st

Dear Parents,

Happy Last Day of February! 

This week we talked about the ake spelling pattern.  We found out that the ake work together to make the long a sound.   We sorted out short a words and long a words that had the ake pattern.  We made words that contained the ay spelling pattern like cake, rake, snake, and bake.  We also learned the sight words "your" and "if". We reviewed these words in the stories, poems, and writing we did this week.  We continue to review all words and assess through the year! Please continue to work on these words with your child.  

The story this week was Just Going to the Dentist.   While listening to the story, students were working on the strategies of identifying the problem and the solution, retelling, inference, making connections, and stating their opinion.  Ask your kindergartner what their favorite part in the story was.

In writing, we continued working on our narrative writing.  We also worked on writing our favorite February memory.  Ask your kindergartner what was his/her favorite memory in kindergarten! 

In math we have been working on number bonds for addition and subtraction.

Jaguar Jump Start is TOMORROW.  Please wear your Jaguar clothes or the color blue.

1. We are going on our field trip tomorrow!  Please be sure that your child has a COLD lunch and BRINGS a beverage.  We will be having lunch in our classroom after we return from watching Junie B. Jones.

2. We are going to have library check out on Wednesday.  We are having this change because we will be on our field trip during our scheduled library time.  Please have your child return his/her book on WEDNESDAY to be able to check out a new story.

3. Bring those used books in for the Book Nook!  The Book Nook is one of the places during our school carnival.  More info can be found on the school's Thursday folder page.

A Note from the Principal:
Dear Thorson Families,

We need your help in a couple of areas!

First, it is imperative that all parents follow the proper pick up procedures to keep everyone safe!  There is absolutely NO parking allowed in areas that are not marked parking spots. Parking on the sides of the entrance to the parking lot is NOT allowed for any reason.  This is a safety issue. We will have staff members monitoring this area and reminding people who are parked in undesignated spots to move. Please remember that there are a lot of pedestrians and children crossing through the parking lot at the end of the day.  Please travel at a slow speed and follow the directions of the staff members in the crosswalks. Also remember that automobiles may not drive through the circular driveway in the front of the school. This is reserved for bus traffic only and people with handicapped stickers who need to exit their vehicle.  Thank you for your cooperation in ensuring a safe dismissal from school for all!

Second, our annual PTO Winter Carnival is coming up in less than two weeks.  The carnival is on Saturday, March 2 from 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.. This is a great event that the kids and families look forward to each year.  It is also an event that requires a lot of volunteers. Our Winter Carnival Chair and Committee Chairs have been hard at work to make this event a success and really need your help.  Please see the volunteer sign-up link in this Thursday folder and consider signing up for a slot so that we can ensure a fun and successful carnival for all. Additionally, we are again offering pre-sale of wristbands, food and raffle tickets for the carnival.  Ordering your wristbands ahead of time saves you time and money! A pre-sale order form is being sent home with your child today. The form is also available in this week’s folder. Pre-sale orders are due by Feb. 26. Thanks for your help!

From Mrs. Little- Pick up at dismissal time.

Good afternoon, Thorson Families!  We are noticing an increase in issues with people not following the outlined procedures for pick-up at dismissal time.  It is imperative that all parents/care providers follow the proper pick-up procedures to keep everyone safe! Please take a moment to review our procedures for both drop-off and pick-up (attached to this email).  Please also ensure that you have shared these procedures with anyone who is picking up your child (i.e. babysitter, grandparent, etc.).

One of the major issues we are experiencing during pick-up time is people parking in undesignated spots and no parking zones.  Parking in the lot is only allowed in the lined parking spaces. All other areas are off limits to vehicles. Parking on the sides of the entrance to the parking lot is NOT allowed for any reason. This is a serious safety issue as cars and buses are trying to enter the lot and pedestrians are crossing.  Beginning on Monday, February 25, we will have staff members monitoring this area and the rest of the parking lot.  Vehicles parked in undesignated areas will be asked to move. Also, remember that vehicles may not drive through the circular driveway in front of the building. This is reserved for bus traffic, people with handicapped stickers who need to exit their vehicle, and parents/care providers of students with special needs who require additional assistance from our staff in entering and exiting their vehicle.  Please travel at a slow speed through the parking lot and follow the directions of the staff members on duty.

We certainly understand that parking is limited and that pick-up time can be a challenge. Please plan ahead and be patient. If everyone follows the pick-up procedures, we will have a safe, orderly, and efficient pick-up process. Thank you so much for your attention to this very important matter!

Valentine's Party

We had a fun time at our little Valentine Party.  The kiddos loved the special treats!  Thank you to the families that donated items for the party.  The kiddos loved passing out and opening up their special valentines from all of their friends.  Thank you to Gigi who came in to play Bingo with us today.  We LOVE kindergarten!

M is our Student of the Week.  He invited his mom, dad, and little brother to read to our class.  M's dad read the story Back to the Future and M's mom read a Curious George Valentine's Day story.  We loved both stories very much.  Thank you so much for coming to read to us today!

Valentine's Day Candy Graph

We graphed candy hearts with our third grade buddies.  It was fun to see which color had the most hearts.  When we were finished with our sheets we could then enjoy the special treats while reading a story.

Spare Pair of Clothes

Families,

The health room has asked that all kindergarten friends bring in a pair of spare clothes that can be kept at school.  Often there are not the sizes needed for our friends if they need a new pair of clothes.

Please put your child's spare pair of clothing in a plastic baggie with his/her name on it.  We can keep these clothes in the white bins by your child's coat hook.

Happy Heart Month!  This week the students at Thorson are participating in heart themed STEM challenges in IMC class.  STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math and is the learning of these subjects together in an integrated approach.  STEM activities provide hands-on learning experiences that require critical thinking and creativity and are both fun and interesting.  The STEM challenges in IMC include such things as stacking heart candy as high as possible, building a structure out of gummy candy and toothpicks, and building heart themed words out of legos.  We are excited to continue this work and will be creating some makerspace bins containing various STEM activities that teachers can check out of the library to use with their classes. We could use your help in collecting some of the materials that are needed.  Please see this list of materials.  Any donations would be greatly appreciated.  Check out the pictures below of the students completing their STEM challenges!  

Also, I would like to thank all of those families who came out to the CHS boys basketball game last Friday evening.  We had a huge turn out of Thorson families in attendance. It was a great time for all and we certainly represented Thorson well.  Thanks to Athletic Director, Jon Hannam, for starting this new event and for organizing it all. Go Jaguars and Bulldogs!

HEALTH ROOM- The health room is looking for donations of gently used boys and girls sweat pants, athletic pants or leggings without any zippers, buttons or snaps.  We especially need girls sizes 5-10 (small and medium) and boys sizes 6-12 (small and medium).  

Winter Carnival 

Thorson’s largest fundraiser is coming up in a few short weeks. Winter Carnival is Sat. March 2nd. The kids absolutely love this event and it’s an opportunity to raise funds for our wonderful school.
Volunteers do not necessarily have the time; they just have the heart. We need you to make this event a success. This event relies on many volunteers. Pleasesign up to help for just a couple hours.
We are also offering an opportunity to buy wristbands, food, and raffle tickets for classroom baskets early for a limited time.  This not only saves money, but saves time by avoiding the lines. Please see the Pre-Sale form for more information.

2019 Thorson Silent Auction Donation Request: Do you own a vacation home? Are you willing to donate a service? Do you have season tickets? Do you own, work for, or know of a business willing donate goods, services, or a membership in return for some great publicity? If you answered yes! to any of these questions, please consider donating to the 2019 Thorson Silent Auction! Don’t delay - donations must be received by Friday, February 15^th! 

Thorson Dad's Club will be hosting its 4th Annual Dodgeball fundraiser at Cedarburg Winter Fest 2/17 at Noon. Please put together a team for your kiddos! We can accommodate up to 10 players per team. You can have adults, and children on the same team.

Great America Reading Program
Thorson is participating in the Great America reading program.  Students (K-5) will be receiving a log and information letter sent home soon from their homeroom teacher. If a student reads six hours at home before Friday, February 15th, he or she will receive a ticket to visit Great America.  Happy Reading!

Box Tops- Please turn in boxtops this week by Friday, February 15th for the next round of box tops to be due.  The classroom that turns in the most boxtops at that time will have a popcorn party upon the teachers chosen date.
A few things to keep in mind when turning in the box tops - please check the expiration date - if it is dated past what today’s date is we can not use it towards our program because it has expired.  If the date is torn and not 100% visible we can not include this in our count.  There also is a boxtop app on all smart phones that families can upload to than scan there store receipts to earn more credit towards Thorson Box top program.

Join us for a very special entertaining and informative evening. Moderated by Emmy award-winning TV personality Katrina Cravy, this evening will feature a musical performance by Hannah Mrozak (Citizen Queen, American Idol, The Voice) and a conversation with Hannah and Rogers InHealth Specialist Sue McKenzie, regarding a subject in the forefront of all of our minds – Teens coping with stress and anxiety.

Hello Community Members and Cedarburg High School Alumni,

Recently a group of alumni convened to explore the idea of adding field turf to our stadium. There was enough initial interest, that this small group of alumnus, have now established a field turf advisory team. The team, consisting of alumni and booster club representatives, is making great progress in organizing a giving campaign. The goal of the campaign is to raise $850,000. If this goal is achieved, Bulldogs will play on turf for the 2019 fall sports season on Alumni Field inside Cedarburg Stadium.  For this goal to become a reality, we need your assistance in soliciting interest to support this campaign through a monetary donation.
The formula for a successful capital campaign includes contributions from local businesses, families of future, current and past users and other philanthropic individuals. Cedarburg has never shied away from a challenge. Our great success is due to the tremendous support from our community. To bring this goal to fruition, it will truly require a team effort. By creating the conditions for contagious contributions to be made, raising $850,000 by March 2019 is an attainable goal.
Please consider making a pledge to the campaign before March 2019. We are relying on your generosity to bring turf to Alumni Field. The turf will bring the stadium to life with so many more activities.
