Just a reminder, that our field trip is on Monday! The kiddos are VERY excited! Please be sure your child has the following items for a successful trip.
1. A cold lunch and drink. NO HOT LUNCH WILL BE SERVED THIS DAY! (We will be eating in our classrooms)
2. A sturdy bag with your child's name on it. This bag will be used to hold a pumpkin.
3. Be sure that your child is dressed for the weather!
We are all going to have a great time! Just as a reminder, that if you were not chosen to be a chaperone, you are more than welcome to join us at Basse's. You will just need to pay for your admission. We would love the help!

5 Little Bats
We have been working on the poem "Five Little Bats" all week. The students were able to find our star words, look for rhyming words, and match beginning sounds. On Fridays, we share our poem with our friends around the school. Please enjoy the video of the students sharing their poem with all of you!

Shake them Skeleton Bones!
We all love the song Skeleton Bones that we sing in the morning. It is a perfect one for Halloween! We decided that we wanted to make our own skeleton and label it. You can take a look at it on our classroom door. The kiddos did a great job at using the word wall for our star word "the". Students also did a great job at using their turtle talk when we needed to spell out a word.

It has been an exciting week at Thorson as we celebrated Red Ribbon Week and Fall. The students enjoyed special dress up days throughout the week to signify the importance of making positive and healthy choices. Students also participated in various activities to learn about making healthy choices, resisting peer pressure, and having a positive self-image. These themes will continue to be stressed at school through our guidance lessons and Jaguar Jumpstart themes.
This week we also held our ever popular Pumpkin Days. I am always amazed at the unique pumpkins that are created by students and families to help us celebrate fall. Thank you to all of the families who brought in a decorated pumpkin. The students had a chance to peruse the pumpkins during their weekly IMC class and had a blast checking out all of these wonderful creations. Check out the picture below for a glimpse of Pumpkin Days! Tomorrow, we will celebrate our annual Halloween Parade at 3:00 p.m. Happy fall, everyone!

Pumpkin Days at Thorson – The annual Thorson Halloween Costume Parade is tomorrow, starting promptly at 3:00pm. Parents are welcome to line the hallways to watch the parade. Please keep in mind student's costumes MUST be school appropriate, no gore, blood, or weapons– please see the flyer for additional information. If your child has a pumpkin in the IMC, please pick-it up before you leave for the day. Any pumpkins left will be disposed off.

CEF Fall Bash- For a roaring good time, come to the 2017 Fall Bash and help support the Cedarburg Education Foundation. This year’s theme is The Roaring 20s!
The Fall Bash will take place at the Cedarburg Cultural Center on November 4th starting at 6:30 PM. Double Platinum DJ will provide entertainment playing all of your favorite songs. There will be dinner, dancing, a boat raffle package, a 50/50 raffle, a Fund-A-Need and a silent/live auction. Advance tickets are $60 /person. Tickets will be $75/person after November 1st and at the door.

Newsletter-Our Week In Review-October 23-27th
Dear Families,
We cannot believe it is the end of October! The students are looking forward to the Halloween parade on Friday at 3:00 p.m. It has been a fun tradition for many years. All students can participate and visitors are welcome to watch in the halls. Please let teachers know if you are planning to take your child home following the parade. Thank you!
During Reading this week we have worked on the -an word family and the -ad word family. Students were asked to build, sort, and read these words. We read the story Bat Loves the Night. It is a nonfiction story that taught us about bats. Students used the reading strategies of visualizing, making connections, inferring, and stating their opinion about bats. As a class we worked on making a tree map about the information we learned about bats. Ask your kindergartner what bats ARE, CAN, and HAVE. The star words "to" and "make" have been introduced. Be sure that your child knows these words and the other star words that have been previously learned.
We also have noticed the change in temperatures that are causing a need for warmer clothing. Just a reminder that the students are outside 3x's a day for 20 min. recesses. Thank you for helping your child practice with zippers and sequence of dressing at home (coat (zip!), hats, and then mittens or gloves last).

Friday, October 27th - Halloween party (2:30pm) and parade (3:00pm)- Students should BRING their costumes in a bag with their name on it. Students will change into their costumes before the party/parade.

Field Trip on Monday, October 30th
Thank you to all of the parents that volunteered for our field trip! I had a lot of parents that were willing to go with us. Unfortunately, we can only take so many parents on the bus. I have already contacted the families who will be our chaperones. If you were not asked for this trip and you would still like to go to the pumpkin farm, you can meet us there. You will need to pay to get in. We can always use extra help!

Newsletter-Our Week In Review- October 16th-20th
Dear Families,
Com. Arts:
During reading this week we read the story Pumpkin Jack by Will Hubbel. The children loved hearing the story of a little boy and his pumpkin. While reading the story, we worked on a number of reading strategies: predicting, retelling, finding the setting, and making connections to the story. We also learned about the life cycle of a pumpkin. As a class we created a poster and that displayed the steps to the life cycle. Ask your kindergartner what they liked best about the story!
Also during reading this week we have talked about the word families -at and -ap. Students were asked to build these words, sort these words, and read these words. See if your kindergartner can tell you an -at or -ap word! We worked on the star words "zoo" and "go" Please be sure to review them with your child because they will be tested on them throughout the school year! Many friends are making great progress!
Science:
We are continuing to work on our Earth science journals. We have learned that the sun is the only star that we see during the day time. We know that the sun appears to be bigger and brighter to us because it is much closer to us than the other stars we see in the sky.
Reminders:
** Next Friday, October 27th is our Halloween party and parade. Our day will follow the same routine until about 2:20. We will then have some organized activities and prepare for the parade at 3:00. You are welcome to watch the parade in the halls. If you take your child home on that day PLEASE let the teacher know. The children should bring their costumes in a bag to school and be able to change somewhat independently. Please no guns or swords.
**Thank you to our room moms Mrs. Seymour and Mrs. Meyer for asking for donations and getting volunteers for our Halloween Party!
**Continue to practice self care skills with your child. Many friends have difficulty zipping up their coats and tying their shoes.

In just over a week, we will celebrate our annual Read-A-Thon, which is one of our key PTO fundraisers! During the week of October 30, we will celebrate the importance of reading. The week will kick-off with an assembly where students will get to meet author Lesley Kagen and hear about how books have impacted her life. It is always fun for the students to see how books can open doors for people and think about what they love about reading and the importance of it in their lives. Then, we will close up the week with a Read-A-Thon guest reader celebration. Each grade level will have guest readers who will come and share a story or two with them. The kids LOVE interacting with their guests readers and sharing a story with them. It is a great opportunity to celebrate reading and our community.
Today, your child will be bringing home the Read-A-Thon pledge sheet. We are asking students to pledge to read a certain amount and then ask for support from their parents, family, neighbors, or friends to help the PTO raise funds to allow them to continue to support our school. We are so lucky to have an active PTO that provides funding for many items and activities to enrich our learning environment. Please consider supporting this great cause. New this year, we will be combining the teacher lunch raffle with the Read-A-Thon. For every $5 turned in, students will receive a raffle ticket to put in the drawing for lunch with the teacher of their choice. This has previously been done at Winter Carnival and has been a popular item with the students. Also, if we meet our school fundraising goal of $8,000, I will be participating in a RAT (Read-A-Thon) Race against another teacher at one of our Jaguar Jumpstart meetings. If we meet the goal, students will get to vote for who I will race against. I am already training, so let’s get those donations in so the race can begin! Happy reading, everyone! Red Ribbon Week 2017- October 23-27: Be Bright, Live Right- Stay Drug Free!
Pumpkin Days at Thorson – It is that time of year again, the ever popular Pumpkin Days at Thorson, October 23rd-27th. Bring in your decorated (not carved) pumpkins to school and have them displayed in the IMC. Pumpkins Days ends on October 27th with annual Thorson Halloween Costume Parade (Please keep in mind costumes MUST be school appropriate) at 3:00pm – please see the flyer for additional information.
Picture Retake Day – If you would like your child’s picture retaken, please send the photos back on Tuesday, October 24th and indicate what you would like changed.
Students that were absent on Picture Day will have their photo taken on Retake Day. Send the photo envelope with your child on Retake Day or, if you ordered online, please send the verification form with your child.
If you did not, originally order pictures and received a proof, follow the instruction on the proof on how to order. If you would like the photo retaken, send the proof to school with your child and indicate what you would like changed.
All students’ photographs will be included in the class composite. The class photographs arrive later and for those who ordered the composite picture, it will be sent home in students’ backpacks usually around Thanksgiving break.
