Newsletter-Our Week In Review- September 24-27th

September 27, 2018

Dear Families,

We have had another successful week in Kindergarten!  Thank you for all of your help in preparing your children for the day.

This week during  Reading, we have been working on the story, Chrysanthemum. In this story we worked on the skill of making predictions, retelling, character identification, inference, and opinion writing.  Ask your kindergartner what their favorite part in the story was!

This week we have been working on the letters, q, o, e, and j.  We have been able to make their sounds and identify words that start with these letters.  We have also been working on our Star Words, “and & like”.  Please be sure to practice these words with your child. 

During Math we have been working on shape identification.  We have talked about rectangles, squares, hexagons, and circles.  We were able to make these shapes using geoboards.  We also played Simon Says using the words above, below, next to, beside, in front of, and behind.  Today we also started looking at 3D shapes- cube, sphere, cone, and cylinder.  It was fun to search the classroom for them!

A Letter from Mrs. Little Greetings Thorson Families, Next week we will have our first Jaguar Jumpstart on Friday, October 5.  Jaguar Jumpstart is a weekly, all school meeting that occurs each Friday morning.  These meetings help us to build community, character, and unity in our school. At these meetings, we reinforce our school expectations (Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Ready to Learn) and focus on monthly character traits.  Each grade level and school team takes a turn leading these weekly meetings. Students are typically involved in these mini-presentations about the monthly character trait. At the beginning of each month, we will share information about the character trait we will be focusing on in the weekly notes.  This information will include ways that you can reinforce this character trait at home. For more information about Jaguar Jumpstart, click here.  We encourage students and staff to wear spirit wear or our school colors (blue and white) every Friday to show our school spirit. We are looking forward to celebrating our school and our students each Friday!   Additionally, October 5 is also the day of our Fun Run!  All students will participate in the Fun Run. Students in 4K-2nd will have their run at 10:00 a.m., afternoon 4K students will run at 1:05 p.m., and students in 3rd-5th will run at 2:00 p.m.  We encourage parents and family members to come out and cheer on their student.  See the information that your student brought home yesterday for more information about this event and how you can help raise funds for our Thorson PTO.  Thank you in advance for your support! Today we got to go to a pep rally for our school run!  It was a lot of fun.  Our team name is called "Rocky's Racing Rhinos"  We are so excited for the run.  We each got some pledge books and fun gears after the assembly.

Our class is having a blast preparing for the Jaguar Pride Fun Run coming up soon! We've also begun to learn how to solve problems using character through Boosterthon's character theme, MindSpark Mystery Lab. While they're teaming up with the MindSpark Kids to solve mysteries, your students will learn five 21st-century character traits that will help strengthen themselves and our world. Make sure to ask your students what they've learned each day, and together you can watch the story unfold on funrun.com!

Focusing Attention

In your child's folder there will be a letter about how we are learning to focus our attention on something.  Being able to focus attention helps children be better learners.  I helps studnets ignore distractions and focus on what is important in class.   

We practiced this skill by playing a game with Puppy and Snail.  We had to listen to what Snail was saying and ignore what Puppy was saying.  For example if Snail said "Follow follow, put your hands on your head." we would do it.  However, if Puppy said "Follow follow, stand up!"  We would ignore what he said.  Some students got the hang of it!  It takes a lot of practice to focus.  

There is  a space at the bottom of this letter for children to practice using their attent-o-scopes with your.  If your child completes this work, you sign it, and return it to school, I will give your child a small prize.

Newsletter-Our Week In Review- September 17-21st

Dear Families,

This week we have been working on the letters, c,a, d, and g.  We have been able to make their sounds and identify words that start with these letters.  We have also been working on our Star Words, “see & am”.  Please be sure to practice these words with your child.

In Writing, we are learning the routines of Writer's Workshop.  We are working on writing for longer periods of time each day.  We are also working on labeling our work and doing our best to add words to our stories.  Writers have also been asked to tell the who, what, when, and where in their stories.  Please encourage your child to try writing down the sounds that they hear!  It is okay if the spelling is not quite perfect now- we can always go back to fix it!

During Math we have been working on number identification 1-5.  We practiced this by playing a bingo game.  The kiddos loved it!  We also started looking closely at the shapes circle, square, rectangle, and triangle.  Students needed to identify objects in the classroom that were that shape.

A Letter from Mrs. Little

Greetings Thorson Families,

This year, the Thorson PTO has partnered with Boosterthon for their main fundraiser which is the Jaguar Pride Fun Run! It’s a two-week program that kicks off with a Pep Rally on Sept. 26th. Families will then gather pledges for every lap your student runs (30-35 laps), and we’ll celebrate at the Fun Run on Oct. 5th.

Students will also experience an amazing character theme, MINDSPARK MYSTERY LAB! Boosterthon’s most exciting theme yet combines S.T.E.A.M skills (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) with character-building. While they're teaming up with the MindSpark Kids to solve mysteries, our students will learn five 21st-century character traits that will help strengthen themselves and our world.

The PTO has set a goal of raising $20,000.  Donations will go toward a new projection system for the gym, reading room tools, and flexible seating for the classrooms. So please help our school by reaching out to sponsors. Also, all families are invited to come out and cheer on your student at the Fun Run on Oct. 5!  Students in 4K-2nd will have their run at 10:00 a.m. and students in 3rd-5th will run at 2:00 p.m. Afternoon 4K students are welcome and encouraged to join their 4K peers at the morning run at 10:00 a.m.  See the Fun Run FAQ document here for more information.  If you would like to get a head start, you are welcome to go in and register your child online so they can begin collecting pledges.  More information will be coming soon. HB's Special Guest Reader

When it is your turn to be Student of the Week, you get to invite someone you care about to read a story to the class.  This week, it was HB's turn!  She invited her mom to read us a fun story about a little girl who made some yummy robot cupcakes for a school bake sale.  We all enjoyed this story.  Thank you so much for coming to visit!

All Star Work

In writing, we learned all about All Star Work.  When we color, we need to make sure that we...

1. Stay in the lines

2. Have no white spaces

3. Use colors that make sense. 

We practiced this by coloring a page of fruit and then drawing/coloring our own picture of our favorite piece of fruit.

There is a poster in our room that will help us remember to have all star work. 

Please encourage your child to try All Star work when they are working on something at home!

Being A Good Listener

In your child's folder there will be a letter about how we are learning to be good listeners.  It is important to be a good listener because it will help us to be better learners.  We learned about the listening rules.  We need to have:

1. Eyes Watching

2. Ears Listening

3. Voice Quiet

4. Body still

Please review these listening rules with your child.

There is also a space at the bottom of this letter for children to draw a picture of one of the listening rules.  If your child completes this work, you sign it, and return it to school, I will give your child a small prize.

We watched a short video about being a good listner.  It was a great reminder to how to be a good listener.  I would encourage you to watch it with your child.

Newsletter-Our Week In Review- September 10th-14th

Dear Families,
 Your kindergartner continues to be busy!  In Communication Arts we are  and learning the star words “I” and “am”. Please practice these words with your child as they will be reviewed and tested throughout the school year.  We have been working on the story The Recess Queen.  We learned how to make predictions, retell the story, infer, and answer questions about the story.  Here is a video about the story.

In writing, we have been working on drawing a picture and labeling what it is.  You may see some invented spelling for our labels.  This is perfectly okay!  Students are learning to hear the sounds in the words and writing what they hear down.  There will be plenty of time for us to have the correct spelling at another time!

Our poem this week is called Apples.  I am sure that you have heard this poem at home this week!  We created actions, found letters, found rhyming words, and told our poem to other classrooms.  Ask your kindergartner to say it to you!

During math we have been practicing our numbers 1-5 and sorting objects in a variety ways. We have also been playing a game called "Match it" ask your kindergartner all about it.

• Remember to have your child wear shoes that they are able to take on and off independently.  
• Make sure your child has a daily healthy snack!
• Please practice zipping jackets and tying shoes with your child.

A Letter from Mrs. Little

Greetings Thorson Families,

Happy 2nd week of school!  We have had an excellent two weeks and the students are really getting into the school routine.  We kicked off the second week with a school-wide assembly where we introduced all of our new staff and students and celebrated the great work the students have been doing being respectful, responsible, and ready to learn throughout our school building.

All families with students in grades 1-5 should have received an email with a virtual curriculum night presentation providing you with important information regarding the curriculum and various procedures for your child’s grade level.  Please be sure to review this information and let your child’s teacher know if you have any questions.

Students in grades 1-5 will be taking the NWEA MAP assessment in Reading and Math beginning today through September 27.  (Please note: Kindergarten students will not be taking the assessment in the Fall, but will take it in the Winter and Spring testing windows.  Your child’s teacher will have the specific dates that your child will be taking the assessment. Please do your best to ensure that your child is in school for their testing dates, is well rested, and has had a healthy breakfast.  Results of this assessment will be posted to your family account in Skyward. You will receive an email when the results are posted with directions on how to access them.
