Busy Days In Kindergarten
We have had two busy days in kindergarten! Yesterday we got to decorate our gingerbread houses and today we got to go to a special assembly for the toy drive. Please enjoy the Animoto video of pictures from these days.

Newsletter-Our Week In Review
Dear Parents,
This week we talked about the sounds sl and gl. We also learned the sight words "do" and “this”. We reviewed these words in the stories, poems, and writing we did this week. We continue to review all words and assess through the year! Please continue to work on these words with your child.
The story this week was The Gingerbread Man retold by Jim Aylesworth. While listening to the story, students were working on the strategies of visualizing, retelling, problem/solution, character traits, and stating their opinion. The children really loved it when the Gingerbread Man popped out of the oven and surprised the Old Man and Old Woman.

In math, students have been working on identifying numbers that are 1 more or 1 less. We played the game of Match It +1 or -1 where students had to draw a card and build a tower of cubes that is one more that is stated on the card. Their partner had to match it. Students had to use math talk to describe what was happening. For example if a 6 card was drawn, students would have to build a tower of 7 cubes. Students would need to say 7 is 1 more than 6. We also continue to work on number recognition and number formation. Please continue to work on these with your child.
Reminders:
1. Tomorrow is hat day if you donate $1 for the Kids to Kids toy drive.
2. Wear red and green tomorrow!
3. Practice the self-care skills of zipping, buttoning, and tying shoe laces.
4. Our holiday party is on Thursday, December 22nd. Please be sure to turn in any supplies you have offered to donate for our party on this day!

Kapco Kids2Kids Toy Drive
Thorson Student Council News:
The Thorson Student Council is asking families and staff members to participate in the KapcoKids2Kids Toy drive this holiday season. Our Student Council will be collecting new, unwrapped toys from December 5-16th. This is the 7th year that Thorson has participated in this wonderful program that collects toys for the less fortunate children in our area. Please make a donation to this very worthwhile cause. Your support is very much appreciated!
Kids2Kids Toy Drive Events: Donate $1.00 to the Toy Drive:
December 9th - Purchase a Student Council Ornament for $1.00 to be displayed on the Student Council Bulletin Board
December 16th – Donate $1.00 to the toy drive and you are able to wear a hat to school
Student Drop Off
Please know that school parking lots are not designed to handle the number of vehicles that come to school at the beginning and end of each school day. Thorson Elementary School does everything they can to encourage parents to follow the parking lot rules and maximize the flow of traffic. The staff knows that your time is precious, but the safety of every student is their first priority. Be your child’s best example; please be courteous and follow all Thorson Parking Lot Procedures at all times.
Please note: Before school supervision is provided from 8:35am-8:42am on the playground. Please do not drop-off or allow your child to arrive at school before 8:35am. Upon arrival all students must wait behind the yellow lines painted on the front sidewalk until the bell rings and supervisors are on the playground.
Your patience, understanding, and support is appreciated.

With the weather turning cold it’s a good time to review the school policy about outside recess. All students are expected to go outside for recess whenever the wind chill factors are not colder than minus 10 degrees. Children should come to school dressed for the changing conditions of Wisconsin weather. Thorson Elementary School has the following expectations for all students to be safe during our outdoor recess: snow pants, warm coat, boots, hats and mittens/gloves. Students may play in the snow if they are dressed properly (snow pants and boots). All students must wear boots to play on the blacktop when there is snow on the ground.
If we are outside all students must go outdoors for recess. Unfortunately students who have colds and coughs are not allowed to stay indoors. We will willingly make an exception if we receive a note from your child’s physician stating otherwise. Under these conditions your child will sit in the office during recess.

The concert will be held at the Cedarburg Performing Arts Center tonight, December 15th at 6:30pm. Each family has been allotted two seats to this concert. If you have grandparents or other loved ones who would like to attend, they are welcome to attend the dress rehearsal this afternoon, December 15th at 1:15 p.m. at the CPAC. Please be sure your student is dressed up for the concert. Jeans, t-shirts, sweatshirts, and sweatpants are not appropriate. Please try avoiding wearing shirts/pants with logo’s. Thank you!

Health Volunteers Needed
We are reaching out to all the elementary school families today in hopes that we can find a couple of parents/guardians that would be willing to assist us when/if any new lice cases emerge. Our District Nurse would provide the training, be on site during the lice checks to help verify your findings, and answer any questions that you may have. This would allow the school staff the opportunity to continue on with their day and designated responsibilities without interruption. Creating a group of parents that would be willing to help out when needed would not only help our nurse and the staff, but also the students. Classroom lice checks can be a bit of a lengthy process at times and we are looking for volunteers to help make that process quicker for the students. Brain Break with Me Moves
Besides Go Noodle, (our favorite!) our class will often do a MeMoves.

MeMoves™ is an easy and innovative way to increase attention and calm in as little as two minutes – in the classroom, at home, anywhere – for people of all ages and abilities. A multimedia program that transforms the mind and body through interactive “body puzzles,” this patented system was designed to activate the parasympathetic nervous system, providing the user with an effective tool for self regulation in only a few minutes.
Each MeMoves™ sequence is a patented combination of music, movement and images, utilizing simple, geometric shapes. Organized into three categories; Joy, Focus and Calm, users select one of 13 video sequences and follow along (imitate) the actions on the screen.
The neurological basis for MeMoves’ robust results can be found in Stephen Porges’ polyvagal theory, one of the most celebrated new developments in neurobiology. MeMoves’ faces with eye contact and expressive features of emotion, music supporting the same frequency as the female voice, and simple gestures perfectly align with the positive social engagement elements identified by Porges. MeMoves’ unique ability to “calm and connect” people of all ages works equally well at home, in the classroom or in a clinic setting.

When the video is played, the kiddos are expected to try their best, (some of the puzzles are a little tricky!) stand/sit (however the child feels most comfortable) and voices should be off (to help others concentrate and hear the music). The story this week was Peter's Chair by Ezra Jack Keats. While listening to the story, students were working on the strategies of predicting, retelling, connecting, and stating their opinion. The children really loved it when Peter played a trick on his mom. Ask your kindergartner what the trick was!
In math, students have been working on part/part/whole problems. The students have been doing a great job figuring out what number is missing. We also continue to work on number recognition and number formation. Please continue to work on these with your child.
In science, we are learning about the weather. We are recording the temperature, clouds, wind, and precipitation in our journals.
Reminders:
1. If your child would like to buy an ornament (paper) and have it placed outside Mrs. Kikkert's office, please have him/her bring in $1
2. Practice the self-care skills of zipping, buttoning, and tying shoe laces.
3. Bring in an unwrapped new toy for the Kids to Kids toy drive

Change in Going Home Plans
The safety of every child here at Thorson is very important to us. As you can imagine, with over 400 students, it is quite a large job to be sure that each child knows how they are going home each and every day. We understand that changes to your child’s everyday plan sometimes occur, so please share that information with us via a note/email (lomorrow@cedarburg.k12.wi.us) or telephone call (376-6705) during the day. However, unless it is an emergency situation, these changes in going-home-plans need to be communicated to the office prior to 2:30pm. After 2:30pm, it is much more difficult to get the message through to your child. There is only one person in the office at that time and we do not like to call into classrooms and disrupt learning. All messages are delivered in writing by hand. We appreciate your cooperation with this policy!

Kapco Kids2Kids Toy Drive
Thorson Student Council News:
The Thorson Student Council is asking families and staff members to participate in the KapcoKids2Kids Toy drive this holiday season. Our Student Council will be collecting new, unwrapped toys from December 5-16th. This is the 7th year that Thorson has participated in this wonderful program that collects toys for the less fortunate children in our area. Please make a donation to this very worthwhile cause. Your support is very much appreciated!
Kids2Kids Toy Drive Events: Donate $1.00 to the Toy Drive:
December 9th - Purchase a Student Council Ornament for $1.00 to be displayed on the Student Council Bulletin Board
December 16th – Donate $1.00 to the toy drive and you are able to wear a hat to school
Winter Recess
With the weather turning cold it’s a good time to review the school policy about outside recess. All students are expected to go outside for recess whenever the wind chill factors are not colder than minus 10 degrees. Children should come to school dressed for the changing conditions of Wisconsin weather. Thorson Elementary School has the following expectations for all students to be safe during our outdoor recess: snow pants, warm coat, boots, hats and mittens/gloves. Students may play in the snow if they are dressed properly (snow pants and boots). All students must wear boots to play on the blacktop when there is snow on the ground.
If we are outside all students must go outdoors for recess. Unfortunately students who have colds and coughs are not allowed to stay indoors. We will willingly make an exception if we receive a note from your child’s physician stating otherwise. Under these conditions your child will sit in the office during recess.
5th Grade Sound of the Season Concert
The concert will be held at the Cedarburg Performing Arts Center on Thursday, December 15th at 6:30pm. Each family has been allotted two seats to this concert. If you have grandparents or other loved ones who would like to attend, they are welcome to attend the dress rehearsal on Thursday, December 15th at 1:15 p.m. at the CPAC or the Thorson school assembly on Wednesday, December 14th at 2:30p.m. in the Thorson gym. Please be sure your student is dressed up for the concert. Jeans, t-shirts, sweatshirts, and sweatpants are not appropriate. Please try avoiding wearing shirts/pants with logo’s. Thank you!
Change in Going Home Plans
The safety of every child here at Thorson is very important to us. As you can imagine, with over 400 students, it is quite a large job to be sure that each child knows how they are going home each and every day. We understand that changes to your child’s everyday plan sometimes occur, so please share that information with us via a note/email (lomorrow@cedarburg.k12.wi.us) or telephone call (376-6705) during the day. However, unless it is an emergency situation, these changes in going-home-plans need to be communicated to the office prior to 2:30pm. After 2:30pm, it is much more difficult to get the message through to your child. There is only one person in the office at that time and we do not like to call into classrooms and disrupt learning. All messages are delivered in writing by hand. We appreciate your cooperation with this policy!
Kindness Calendar
This month's theme is Kindness. The third grade has been using this calendar to try to show kindness during the month of December. We challenge the students from Thorson to try some of the activities on this calendar or make up your own to to show kindness to your family, friends, and community.
Thorson Veggie Taste Test of the Month
Thorson students had a chance to taste test Rutabaga this week, courtesy of the partnerships we have with Fuel Up to Play 60, Wellspring Farm to School program, Thorson PTO and our CSD Food Service program.

Health Volunteers Needed
We are reaching out to all the elementary school families today in hopes that we can find a couple of parents/guardians that would be willing to assist us when/if any new lice cases emerge. Our District Nurse would provide the training, be on site during the lice checks to help verify your findings, and answer any questions that you may have. This would allow the school staff the opportunity to continue on with their day and designated responsibilities without interruption. Creating a group of parents that would be willing to help out when needed would not only help our nurse and the staff, but also the students. Classroom lice checks can be a bit of a lengthy process at times and we are looking for volunteers to help make that process quicker for the students. basis.
We will also be having a buy an ornament day on Friday, Dec. 9th and a hat day on Friday, December 16th. Students can donate a dollar to the toy drive and buy an ornament for the bulletin board outside of Mrs. Kikkert's office or wear a hat to show their support. Student council members will be collecting the money at each homeroom.

Newsletter-Our Week In Review
Dear Parents,
Happy December! The kindergartners are doing well with settling in the morning. They all enjoy checking in for the day on the Smart Board as well as doing our morning routine.
This week we talked about the sounds sh and ch. We also learned the sight words "are" and “so”. We reviewed these words in the stories, poems, and writing we did this week. We continue to review all words and assess through the year! Please continue to work on these words with your child.
The story this week was The Bear Snores On by Karma Wilson. While listening to the story, students were working on the strategies of predicting, retelling, connecting, and using the skill of infer. The children really loved hearing the story about a party happening in the Bear's den. Ask your kindergartner what their favorite part of the story was!
In science, we have started our weather unit. We are learning the different kinds of weather: windy, sunny, cloudy, and rainy.
**Upcoming reminders:
1. If you are able to, please donate a new unwrapped toy for the Kids to Kids toy drive.
2.. Please work on basic life skills with your kindergartner-this includes zipping up jackets, buttoning, and tying shoe laces.
