Newsletter-Our Week In Review

Dear Parents,

This week we talked about how oa works together to make the long o sound like in the word goat.  We sorted out short o words and long o words that had the oa pattern.  We made words that contained the oa spelling pattern like road, soap, boat, and float.  We also learned the sight words "where" and “me”. We reviewed these words in the stories, poems, and writing we did this week.  We continue to review all words and assess through the year! Please continue to work on these words with your child.  Please remember that I test Star Words on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

The story this week was Tacky the Penguin.   While listening to the story, students were working on the strategies of visualizing, retelling, inference, making connections, and stating their opinion.  The children really loved all the silly things that Tacky would do.  Ask your kindergartner what their favorite part in the story was.

In writing, we started working on our how to writing.  Students are asked to think of something that they were an expert at and then write out the steps.  Some things that we are good at are, taking care of pets, washing our hands, playing on the monkey bars, and getting dressed for winter.  We need to put our stories in order step by step so our friends who are reading it can do the same thing!

In math we starting learning about heavier and lighter.  We worked with a balance to see which object is heavier or lighter.  We learned that just because something is big doesn't mean it will weigh a lot!

Friday night is the school's Wellness night.  Enjoy having fun being healthy!  See your child's folder for more details.

Next Saturday, February 6th is the Winter Carnival!  I know that they are in need of many more donations and volunteers.  Please contact the office if you can help!

Please LABEL your child's cold weather gear.  We have lots of friends who have similar items.

Jaguar Jump Start is on Monday.  Please wear your Jaguar clothes or the color blue.

Using a balance

In math we used pennies to see about how many it would take to be the same as a certain object. We worked with our table partners. 

Making posters

We were working on some posters for when our special guests from the NFL come to visit. The kiddos had a great time making the posters.

Newsletter- Our Week In Review

This week we talked about how the lazy e.  When we see an e at the end of the word  it will often make the other vowel do all the work (say its name) We can find this in the word home.  The e makes the o say the long o vowel sound.  We sorted out short o words and long o words that had the -o_e pattern.  We made words that contained the o_e spelling pattern like home, rose, note, and cone.  We also learned the sight words "with" and “my”. We reviewed these words in the stories, poems, and writing we did this week.  We continue to review all words and assess through the year! Please continue to work on these words with your child.  Please remember that I test Star Words on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

The story this week was Ice Bear.  This story is a nonfiction story that told us information about polar bears.  While listening to the story, students were working on the strategies of visualizing, retelling, inference, making connections, and stating their opinion.  Ask your kindergartner a fact that he/she learned about polar bears.

In writing, we finished up our unit on opinion writing.  During this past month we continued our work with making books.  Students looked at some of the ways writers write.  We continued our study of telling our message through pictures and through words.  We continued our work on stretching out unknown words.  We practiced our new strategy to help us figure out multi-syllable words, as well as writing our word wall words.  I hope you enjoyed your little author's hard work!

In math we continued our work with adding and subtracting.  We used a number line to help us out.  Students also practiced writing out the equations.

Reminders:
Please continue to send in a snack for the morning (for friends that need it) and an afternoon snack.  It may be a good idea to send more food than you think in your child's lunch.  Many friends finish their lunch AND the snack that you pack.  They will come to snack time looking for something to eat. It would be a good idea to tell your child what you packed them for snack and what is for lunch.

This week we talked about how the letters -old work together to make the long o vowel sound.  We sorted out short o words and long o words that had the -old spelling pattern.  We made words that contained the ow spelling pattern like fold, gold, sold, and cold.  We also learned the sight words "look" and “has”. We reviewed these words in the stories, poems, and writing we did this week.  We continue to review all words and assess through the year! Please continue to work on these words with your child.

The story this week was Snowmen at Night.  While listening to the story, students were working on the strategies of visualizing, retelling, inference, making connections, and stating their opinion.  The children really loved looking at the beautiful illustrations in the book.

In math we are learning different strategies to add and to subtract.  Some strategies include counting on your fingers, using manipulatives, drawing pictures, and using a number line.  The students are doing a great job!

Reminders:
1. Book orders are due tomorrow!  It is a great time to order some books and snuggle on in to read!
2. Continue to practice tying shoes and zipping up coats
3. On Friday, January 22nd, there is NO school  Have a great long weekend!

Mammals Have Fur Presentation

We had a special visitor from the Schlitz Audubon come I. To talk to us about mammals. We learned a lot of great things about mammals. Be sure to ask your kindergartner what he/she learned.

Newsletter-Our Week In Review

 

Dear Parents,

Happy 2016!  So happy to see all of my friends back at school!  I hope you all had a wonderful winter break.

Thank you all again for the wonderful class gift!  It was so cute how all the children made themselves into elves and gave reasons why they loved me.  They made me smile!  I am looking forward to going to the movies, getting a Starbucks treat, and going to Target.  A HUGE thank you to Mrs. McCulley for organizing it all.  It was AMAZING!

Also, thank you to all the families who donated items for the gingerbread houses and for our holiday party.  Because of all of you, it was a success!

The story this week was The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats.  While listening to the story, students were working on the strategies of visualizing, retelling, inference, making connections, and stating their opinion.  The children really loved looking at the beautiful illustrations in the book.

Reminders:
1. Many children are hungry in the morning.  If this is your child, please be sure to send them in a healthy snack that can quickly be eaten in the morning.
2. Practice the self-care skills of zipping, buttoning, and tying shoe laces. It may be a good idea to practice getting all your snow gear on as well!  Practice what to do if your coat is turned inside out or if your pants are inside out.
3. Please LABEL your child's cold weather gear.  There are LOTS of black boots and black snow pants.  You may think your child knows if it belongs to them but often they do not!
