Dear Parents,

We hope that all of you had a great long weekend with your kindergartner!  Thank you all so much for making arrangements so teachers could have some professional development time on Friday afternoon.  We also hope that you had a great snow day on Wednesday!  We heard that many of you made some time to cozy up with a good book and play in the brand new snow!

In math this week, students have been busy identifying solid shapes.  These solid shapes are the cube, sphere, cylinder, and cone.  Students were able to find these shapes in everyday objects such as a dice, a basketball, a can or soup, and even an ice cream cone.  Walk around your house and see what solid shapes your kindergartner can identify! As always, we encourage you to practice number identification and correct number formation with your kindergartner!

A special occasion is coming up at Thorson!  It is Read Across America Day!  We will be celebrating Dr. Seuss’s birthday on Friday, March 1st  Parents may come to their child’s classroom and read a book with a small group of students.  (Be sure to contact your child’s teacher if you are coming in- for planning purposes) Please bring your own book to read.  However, if you do need a book, please feel free to contact your child’s teacher.

Today a permission slip was sent home for the upcoming play “Thumbelina”  This field trip will be on Monday, March 18th in the morning.  We will be leaving right away at 9:00am and will be back for the scheduled lunch.  Half day friends will be back in time as well.

REMINDER!  If you haven’t done so already, please return the Parent/Teacher conference form.

Thank you all for your continued support!

Dear Parents,

In Guided Reading, the children have been working on the letter “Ee” Children have been practicing writing the letter Ee as well as identifying the sound that it makes.  Students have been working on blending short e words like “pet, red, net,” etc. In Guided Reading, students have been reviewing the star words, “this” and “do”.  Be on the look out for these words in the small books and work your child brings home.  We continue to review all words and assess through the year! Please continue to work on these words with your child.  We would all like your child to know all 54 star words by the end of the year.  If you are not sure of the list of star words, ask your child’s teacher or visit Thorson’s Kindergarten website.

Another skill your child worked on during the Guided Reading block was identifying the main idea and details.  By doing this, your child is practicing the reading strategy of visualizing.  To practice this skill your child listened to the big book A Rainy Day   Ask your kindergartner what happens on a rainy day.

In math this week, students have been busy creating graphs, looking at number grids, and identifying the penny and nickel.  Help your kindergartner with counting pennies by pulling out a few pennies from your change jar and ask for a certain number of cents.  Also ask your child if they could trade in that amount for a nickel.  Another good thing to work on is have your child sort out all the pennies and the nickels in your change jar.  We also encourage you to continue to work on one to one counting and correct number formation with your child.

***REMINDER!  Tomorrow Friday, February 22nd is a HALF DAY.  There will be NO after school care. Please be sure that you have plans made for your child.  There is  NO school on Monday, February 25th.  ***

Thank you all for your continued support!

Dental Health

Today our friend Miss Whitney came from Ghirst Othordontics.  She is an Orthodontic Assistant.  She helps Dr. Ghrist with patients.  Miss Whitney told us all about how to keep our teeth healthy.  We learned that we need to brush and floss our teeth.  We learned that we need to eat healthy foods.

At the end of the presentation, Miss Whitney gave us a special bag with some special goodies to keep our teeth healthy!

Here is a picture of our friend Miss Whitney with Dr. T and patient L.   What a great afternoon!

100 Day Pictures!

We were VERY busy on the 100th day of school (Wednesday)  We were SOOO busy that we are STILL doing some special 100 day activities!

On Wednesday:
We listened to the story "I Can Teach My Dog 100 Words" and then we wrote 100 words!
We found 100 Hershey kisses that were hiding around the room.
We jumped 100 times!
We were quiet for 100 seconds.
We patted our heads and rubbed our bellies for 100 seconds.
We made a special project about what we wanted to do before we were 100 years old.  (Thank's CC's mom for cutting out all of the parts for us!)  Check these ideas out in our hallway!
We read a 100 day book.
We watched a short clip of Curious George counting to 100.
We counted to 100 by 1's, 2's, 5's, 10's!
We made a special 100 day snack.  There were 10 snack food items.  We needed to count out 10 of each and put them on our special mat.  When were were done, there were 100 pieces of snack to eat!  We then had so much food left over that we made another treat for all of the classroom teachers in the building.  (Thank you to EVERYONE who brought in an item to share!)

Friends enjoying their snack special 100 day snack.

 On Thursday:
During writing time we wrote what we would buy if we had $100.  There were some pretty neat ideas!  Be sure to look for this book coming home soon.

At math time,we counted out 50 unpopped popcorn kernels and 50 popped popcorn kernels - 100 in all!  We had to make an estimate at which one would be heavier.

This was our popcorn and sheet before we weighed them.
We found out that 50 popcorn kernels weigh more than 50 popped popcorn kernels.

In the afternoon we had some special 100 day math centers.

Filling up a 100 chart and creating a Froot Loop Necklace.
Stringing them on pipe cleaners.

Making 10 groups of 10 dots
Finding items in a 100 chart.

Making our name pattern using a 100 chart.
Counting out 100 Legos and then building with them.
Rolling the dice and making 100 tally marks!

It has been a VERY busy couple of days in kindergarten!  I hope everyone enjoyed 100 day!

Fresh New Snow!

We had a BLAST today at recess.  There was fresh new snow every where!

Thank you to everyone who remembered to bring snow pants, boots, hats, gloves/mittens.
Please be sure that you also packed your SHOES to wear once those boots are off!

Carnival Basket

What does Hello Kitty, art supplies, and toy cars have in common?

They are all items for our classroom carnival basket!
People attending the carnival will have the chance to win our classroom basket.  We hope to have lots of goodies in there so more people will want to win it!  The more money raised, the more money will go right to great programs that happen here at school.

If you are able to donate, please do so!  All you have to do is bring the item to our classroom.  There will be a basket ready to pick up our fabulous items.

Thanks!
